Department Overview:
The Department of Surgical Sciences at the School of Veterinary Medicine houses faculty from many surgical disciplines, including Ophthalmology (of which the Mowat Lab is a part of). The Mowat Laboratory studies natural aging of the senses and brain in companion dogs, and the relationships between environmental exposures and sensory and brain aging.

Schedule:
Once trained, independent work is encouraged, and work hours can be flexible, working around student class schedule and planned use of the necessary facilities for other purposes of the laboratory. Occasional evening and weekend (Sunday) hours are likely. Each session of work is likely to take approximately 1.5-2.5 hours. Up to 5 sessions per week is anticipated.

Qualifications:
No prior qualifications are required, but biological safety and chemical safety training will be required as part of the job duties.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Preferred candidates will have experience/expertise in pipetting, careful chemical or biological materials handling, and video editing, and/or be willing to undergo training to competence in these skills. Prior experience with laboratory calibrated pipettes is preferred.
Position Summary/Job Duties:
1. Preparation of serial dilutions of multiple odorants for olfactory testing with companion dogs. This involves pipetting using a repeater pipette and regular laboratory (Eppendorf Research Plus) pipettes, safely and hygienically handling aqueous and oil-based odorants and diluents with consistent and careful procedures to maximize reproducibility, and avoid cross-contamination of odorants between samples and the environment. Odorants used include chemicals, food-based odors, and food flavors. Work will be performed in a chemical fume hood within the laboratory. 2. Video editing of recordings of dogs interacting with odorants during behavioral testing. Videos are cropped using a commercial software, to remove the identity of the odorant, and randomized/masked to facilitate behavioral recording by other laboratory members. Physical Demands:
Repeated pipette operation is a necessary part of the job.
