Department Overview:

The Materials Research Science and Engineering Center's Education and Outreach group integrates the discovery of new knowledge in materials science with creation of research-inspired educational materials, innovative programs that broaden participation in STEM fields, industry outreach to promote economic advancement, and professional development opportunities that train the next-generation US workforce.

Qualifications:

UW-Madison student (preferable 2nd or 3rd year in related program)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

It would be helpful to the work done in development of educational outreach materials, to have experience in the Innovation lab (Makerspace) as many of our materials are novel and based on ideas in collaboration with MRSEC lab teams. Also should have basic chemistry and physics knowledge (through introductory chemistry and physics courses), knowledge of engineering principles and design process is also a plus. Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, and preferred experience in Wordpress, Adobe Suite is beneficial but not required. Experience with building tools also a plus. Training provided. Knowledge of Spanish is also beneficial, but not required.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Helping to design, build, and test educational activities inspired by the cutting-edge research in the center. Helping at large outreach events and occasionally, smaller ones. This can include set up and take down, organizing volunteers, ensuring all outreach materials are available and functioning, and engaging and communicating science and engineering to public audiences of all ages. Keeping development lab and resource room organized, inventoried and readily accessible for education team.

Physical Demands:

Lifting up to 25 lbs, ability to work with hands to design, build and test new activities, at large events, there will be standing for long periods of time.
