Department Overview:

Here at the Writing Center, our goal is to teach writers in all disciplines and at all levels to become more confident and more effective writers.

Schedule:

We work around student schedules to create set receptionist schedules for the entire semester so you have regularity and certainty in your weeks. During Spring 2026, we will build the receptionist schedule to staff our Main Center location Monday through Thursday from 9:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Receptionist shifts are typically 2-6 hours in length, and occasional evening and weekend hours may be available for those who are interested.

We seek currently enrolled UW-Madison undergraduate students from across all areas of the university, and we aim to prioritize candidates who are available to renew their employment for future semesters.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

No knowledge of the Writing Center is necessary prior to starting! We are looking for friendly students from all backgrounds who enjoy helping others, and we need good listeners who are able to communicate clearly in person, over the phone, and via email. Comfort with multitasking in a busy setting is important. Ample training is provided in the form of shadowing and having supervisors nearby to answer questions and support you as you learn more about the Writing Center’s programs and services.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
As a receptionist, you play a crucial role in the teaching mission of the Writing Center. You educate students on how the Writing Center works, help students make appointments with instructors, and support the daily functioning of the Center. Whether in person, on the phone, or via email, you are often the first point of contact people have with the Writing Center. As such, you play a vital role in creating a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible community for our students and campus partners.

DUTIES
Support the daily functioning of the Writing Center
Coordinate daily opening and closing procedures
Serve as the front-line greeter of students, faculty, and staff
Create WCOnline accounts and schedule student appointments
Check in and direct students to their appointments
Answer phone calls and emails
Share information about Writing Center services
Refer students to other Writing Center staff or resources as needed
Assist with workshop publicity, inquiries, and registrations
Assist with occasional administrative projects

Physical Demands:

Sitting at a desk, using a computer, answering phones, directing students to their appointments/instructors, organizing supplies, wiping down tables, and assisting Writing Center staff as needed.
