Department Overview:

Sim Lab consists of in person and remote work working in Mixed-Reality (MR) and Virtual-Reality (VR) simulation based learning. Providing these services to teachers and schools to better understand and work through difficult discussion topics. Sim Lab is based out of the Wisconsin Center for Education Research building in the UW Madison Campus.

Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student in Computer Science, Data Science/Analytics, Information Engineering, or a closely related highly-technical field.
• Demonstrated programming proficiency in a relevant language (e.g., Python, C#, JavaScript).
• Experience or strong theoretical understanding of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning concepts as applied to conversational agents or logic structures (e.g., decision trees).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Essential Skills:
• Advanced Coding & Logic Implementation: Proven ability to implement complex programming logic, specifically for branching narratives or decision-tree structures.
• AI and Conversational Agent Knowledge: Familiarity with the structure and deployment of chatbots or conversational AI.
• Strong Debugging and Problem-Solving Skills: Capacity to rapidly identify and resolve technical issues in a development environment.
• Attention to Detail
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Skills
• Prior experience with game engines (e.g., Unity, Unreal) or Mixed/Virtual Reality (MR/VR) development environments.
• Experience with avatar integration, animation, or graphics programming
• Experience with data collection, analysis, or visualization tools (e.g., R, Pandas, SQL).

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Responsibilities: technical development and implementation of core simulation features.
• Mixed Reality/Avatar Development: Directly contribute to the programming and integration of highly realistic, AI-driven avatar persona characteristics. This includes the implementation of advanced features such as:
o Lip-syncing and realistic facial expressions.
o Gesture and body language integration.
o Decision tree logic coding for complex scenario branching.
• AI/Simulation Logic Implementation: Translate nuanced behavioral traits into code, using decision trees and/or other logic structures to ensure persona characteristics are maintained consistently throughout the simulation interaction.
• Simulation Scoring & Feedback System: Develop and implement code for automated scoring mechanisms to evaluate user performance within the simulation. This includes creating data structures for generating customized feedback reports based on simulation outcomes.
• System Testing & Quality Assurance: Conduct rigorous testing, debugging, and troubleshooting of the simulation framework (chatbot, avatar integration, and scoring modules) under the supervision of senior developers.
• Data Management Support (Secondary): Support data cleaning, organization, and management protocols for simulation logs and performance metrics.
