Department Overview:

The Marketing and Communications department at the UW–Madison School of Pharmacy advances the school’s mission by telling compelling stories about its people, programs, research, and impact. The team leads strategic communications that elevate the school’s reputation among alumni, donors, prospective students, peers, and media.

One focus of the department’s work is DiscoveRx, the UW–Madison School of Pharmacy’s quarterly digital alumni magazine. DiscoveRx strengthens alumni affinity and connection to the School by showcasing cutting-edge research, curricular innovation, and the achievements and innovative practice of alumni across pharmacy and the pharmaceutical sciences.

Schedule:

Although there are no set hours to complete most editorial duties, the editorial intern must have availability within business hours to conduct interviews with faculty, staff, students, and alumni.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

Minimum: $15.00 Maximum: $17.00

Qualifications:

Must be enrolled in a major or minor related to journalism or communications or have experience in a related field.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Strong writing and editing skills
• Excellent command of grammar, punctuation, and AP style
• Punctual with deadlines and communication
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with diverse audiences
• Strong professionalism with the ability to represent the School of Pharmacy in a professional manner with external audiences

Position Summary/Job Duties:

• Write stories for the School of Pharmacy’s digital alumni publication, DiscoveRx (discoverx.pharmacy.wisc.edu)
• Conduct background research
• Interview subjects/sources remotely
• Maintain professional and timely communication with the team and subjects/sources
• Draft and revise articles based on feedback
• Provide general editorial support, such as copyediting, gathering images/photos, writing headlines and captions, and other duties to support the publication
• Provide social media support, including drafting posts for the School of Pharmacy’s social media platforms
