Department Overview:

Wisconsin Geological & Natural History Survey (WGNHS) Mission:
The Survey conducts earth-science surveys, field studies, and research. We provide objective scientific information about the geology, mineral resources, water resources, soil, and biology of Wisconsin. We collect, interpret, disseminate, and archive natural resource information. We communicate the results of our activities through publications, technical talks, and responses to inquiries from the public. These activities support informed decision-making by government, industry, business, and individual citizens.

Schedule:

Flexible scheduling between 8am-6pm Monday-Friday. Ideally, students would have a block of at least 3 hours of time available during the hours previously listed.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

Minimum: $15.50 Maximum: $16.00

Qualifications:

Some knowledge of geology, chemistry, engineering, or related field
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds
Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions
Experience with Microsoft Excel and or R
Employment will require a criminal background check
Student must be enrolled for credit at an educational institution. Student will need to show proof of enrollment before starting.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Good written and verbal communication skills
Attention to detail
Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team

Position Summary/Job Duties:

5-10 hours during the school year with potential for continued employment and additional hours in the summer. Lab duties: sample preparation and analysis using a pXRF, downloading and organizing data, drying and preparing water-well cuttings for permanent archive. Field/Repository duties: assist with sample curation tasks, moving, lifting, and photographing geologic samples, travel to and from Repository located in Mount Horeb, WI, assisting with field work and sample collection.
Most work is completed in the lab, with occasional work at the Repository or in the field.

Physical Demands:

Heat/cold tolerance, heavy lifting (30lbs), standing and walking
