Department Overview:
The UW-Madison Arboretum is a research and teaching facility encompassing 1,200 acres of prairies, savannas, woodlands, wetlands, gardens, and Lake Wingra shoreline. The Arboretum is a UW-Madison Research Center dedicated to the restoration and stewardship of native ecosystems, ecological research that informs conservation, and place-based education about the natural world.

Qualifications:
Must be enrolled as a student for the fall 2026 semester. Holding a valid driver's license that meets UW Risk Management standards is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
No prior experience with plant identification is necessary, but prior identification experience and/or demonstrated interest in plant ecology is preferred Must exhibit patience, attention to detail, organization, and willingness to learn Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team
Position Summary/Job Duties:
Undergraduate Research Assistants will work under the supervision of the Arboretum’s Research Ecologist (Dr. Jared Beck). No prior research experience is necessary but enthusiasm for outdoor work, an interest in plant ecology, and curiosity about the natural world are essential! Undergraduate Research Assistants will take part in the Arboretum’s new student leadership program alongside fellow undergraduates working at the Arboretum in land care and education. As part of this program, program participants will participate in several shared experiences including field trips and professional development opportunities led by Arboretum Staff. Job duties include but are not limited to: • Identify, measure, and map trees as part of long-term Arboretum research projects • Assist with field tasks (e.g., surveying herbaceous seedlings, taking canopy photographs, maintaining research plots) to support newly established seed addition experiment • Use of survey-grade GPS unit to establish research plots and generate spatial data for mapping needs • Data entry and validation • Other duties as assigned To apply, applicants should submit a resume listing relevant experiences & coursework as well as contact information for two professional references. Physical Demands:
Willing to do physical work outdoors in adverse conditions (i.e., working in a variety of weather conditions, exposure to ticks and mosquitoes, traveling through brambles and thickets, etc.) The Arboretum is located 4 miles south of campus and is not on a bus line. Reliable transportation is required.
