Department Overview:

 Greater University Tutoring Service, or GUTS, is a learning center on campus that provides students with free, on-campus tutoring and study support. GUTS provides academic tutoring in two formats: weekly small groups and drop-in. Tutoring takes place at many locations across campus.

Invited candidates will be asked to attend a 45-minute in-person interview in March. The interview will consist of two parts: a traditional Q&A and a technical portion. The technical portion will give candidates an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to explain a concept in a mock tutoring setting.

Schedule:

 Schedule based on tutor and tutee availability
Most tutoring takes place Sunday-Thursday from 3-8 PM.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

 Minimum: $16.00 Maximum: $18.00

Qualifications:

 -Current UW-Madison undergraduate or graduate student, with at least one semester completed at UW-Madison by start date
– Desire to help students learn in a welcoming environment
- For the course you wish to support, you must have earned at least a B in the course (or in an equivalent course) at UW-Madison
- Overall GPA of at least 3.25
- One-semester commitment required if hired, one-year commitment preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Previous teaching or tutoring experience preferred
- Comfortable and proficient with course material
- Strong communication skills
- Willingness to learn and grow as a tutor
- Strong candidates will have availability in the afternoon/evening on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and/or Thursdays

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Academic Match Position:
- Facilitate weekly small group tutoring sessions consisting of 5-10 students
- Prepare for tutoring sessions by reviewing course content and developing appropriate and engaging agendas/lesson plans

Drop-in Position:
- Provide short-term course assistance to students
- Prepare for tutoring sessions by reviewing course content and identifying common points of confusion

All positions:
- Foster a welcoming environment that promotes learning
- Work under the supervision of GUTS Leadership and Academic Coordinators
- Complete a 1-credit tutor training course, ED POL 150 – Introduction to Tutoring, in the first year of tutoring
- Attend the Tutor Development Conference at the beginning of Fall and Spring semesters
- Engage in required meetings, observations, and professional development each semester

Physical Demands:

You must be able to meet with students for in-person tutoring.
