Department Overview:

The Wisconsin Energy Institute is the primary home of the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC). One of three bioenergy research centers established by the U.S. Department of Energy in 2007, GLBRC is led by the University of Wisconsin - Madison. With more than 400 scientists, students, and staff representing a wide array of scientific disciplines, GLBRC's mission is to perform the basic research required to convert cellulosic biomass to advanced biofuels. GLBRC conducts highly-collaborative research on biofuels and bioproducts and partners with over 275 institutions spanning 28 countries and 43 US states.

Qualifications:

Chemistry or related discipline

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Experience in general chemistry laboratory techniques is preferred.
• Experience with programing in R or python is desired but not required.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The undergraduate lab assistant will work with staff researchers to run biomass deconstruction and conversion experiments and perform chemical assays with state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation. The lab assistant will gain hands on experience in operating Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Liquid Chromatography (LC), Gas Chromatography (GC), and Mass Spectrometry (MS) instrumentation. They will be trained on how to process and use data from assays to create a computational model of the system. Additionally, the lab assistant will assist in grinding plant biomass, performing biomass pretreatment (cooking), performing solid/liquid separation of the treated biomass and the waste solution, and assist in the development of a protocol to recycle pretreatment process waste streams in a way that also producing value added products to the process.
