Qualifications:
The La Follette School of Public Affairs evaluates applicants for teaching assistantships by considering a variety of factors. Among these factors are the following: 1. Expertise in and commitment to microeconomics through research or previous coursework. Knowledge of the subject should overlap with the specific emphasis and content areas of the course. 2. Evidence of excellence in teaching – either from prior teaching experience or from qualities that demonstrate intelligence and the ability to communicate material clearly, facilitate discussion, and stimulate student interest (previous teaching experience in a course of microeconomics or applied microeconomics preferred). 3. A high level of competence in the applicant’s home discipline. 4. Current enrollment in or acceptance to a UW-Madison doctoral program, economics or agricultural & applied economics strongly preferred. Currently enrolled students must be in good standing.

Position Summary/Job Duties:
PA 818: Introduction to Statistical Methods for Public Policy Analysis Course Description: PA 818 is a core (required) course for graduate students in the Master of Public Affairs (MPA) or Master of International Public Affairs (MIPA) programs. It provides an introduction to three main topics: probability theory, statistical inference, and linear models. Students also learn to utilize the statistical software STATA to analyze data and produce descriptive statistics, conduct statistical inference, and estimate regression modes. The goals of the course are twofold. Firstly, the course is designed to provide students with a core competency in statistical methods as they will apply to policy analysis and program evaluation. As such, students successfully completing the course should have a sound understanding of research design and statistical inference, know how to use and interpret coefficients from linear regression models, and have some facility working with STATA. The second goal of the course is to adequately prepare students to learn more about multivariate statistical methods in the La Follette School’s Advanced Quantitative Methods course (PA 819).
