Department Overview:

Bayview Foundation is a nonprofit organization providing affordable housing and community-centered programs in Madison’s historic Triangle Neighborhood. Our newly redeveloped campus includes 130 affordable housing units and a neighborhood center that offers youth programs, food access initiatives, adult education, social services, and cultural programs.

Bayview Foundation provides high-quality out-of-school academic, social, cultural, recreational, and wellness programs for high school and middle school youth. Our Bayview Youth Leaders in Training (B.Y.L.i.T.) program offers paid summer internship opportunities for youth ages 12-13, focusing on food justice, sustainability, leadership development, and community engagement.

Anticipated Hours Per Week:

Minimum: 15 Maximum: 20

Schedule:

May 4 - June 5: Flexible planning and garden prep hours, about 8 per week
June 8- August 7: Mondays through Thursdays: 12:00-5:00 PM (20 hrs/wk)
August 10-21: Optional Flexible hours, about 15-20 per week for the final harvests & putting the garden to rest.

Qualifications:

Required:
Experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds.
Passion for youth development, food justice, and sustainability.
Knowledge of organic and/or sustainable gardening.
Strong leadership, communication, and mentorship skills.
Experience in healthy food literacy, cooking, and nutrition education.
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Organizational skills to plan lessons, manage materials, and track budgets.
CPR/First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain before the program starts).
Preferred:
Bilingual in Hmong and/or Spanish.
Experience in leadership development, conflict resolution, or teamwork facilitation.
Background in outdoor education, environmental stewardship, or community engagement.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Desire and ability to work with youth who have varying social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and behavioral needs.
Trauma-informed behavioral management skills.
Excitement and passion for working with youth, fostering a positive and engaging learning environment.
Experience working with youth from diverse cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds, with an understanding of equity and inclusion.
Ability to design and implement engaging curriculum, develop timely lesson plans, and utilize community resources.
A youth-centered approach, ensuring curriculum starts with youth interests and encourages active participation.
Patience and adaptability when plans change, while maintaining structure and meeting program goals.
Passion for food justice, conservation, and sustainability, with the ability to connect these topics to skill development for youth.
Experience in gardening, urban farming, food literacy, and sustainability education.
Ability to implement team-building activities that promote collaboration, leadership, and personal growth.
Budget management skills, including tracking and reporting expenses.
Strong communication, organizational skills, dependability, and professionalism.
A love of teaching and learning, with an appreciation for education outside of traditional classroom settings.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Garden-Based Education & Food Justice
Lead gardening activities (planting, weeding, harvesting, composting, pest management).
Teach sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, and food systems.
Maintain the Giving Garden and support Bayview’s food access programs.
Assist youth in food justice and sustainability projects.
Prepare the garden for end-of-season closure.
GrubHub (Cooking & Nutrition Education)
Lead cooking sessions using garden produce.
Teach healthy food preparation, nutrition, and food security.
Encourage youth leadership through recipe development and meal planning.
Adventure & Leadership Activities
Supervise and assist in outdoor field trips (hiking, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, environmental education).
Facilitate leadership workshops focused on communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution.
Collaboration & Program Support
Work closely with the Youth Program Staff and Teen Program Coordinator.
Coordinate field trips and experiential learning activities.
Maintain program records, attendance, and material inventory.
Foster an inclusive, youth-centered learning environment.
