 Carrot Breeding and Genetics program in the Department of Plant and Agroecosystem Sciences led by Dr. Philipp Simon.

Schedule:

 30-40 hours a week during the summer.
Monday to Friday, between the hours of 8am-5pm

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

 Minimum: 17.00

Qualifications:

 Candidates must be:
-Enrolled in courses for Fall 2026 (current students)
-Available to work the majority of the summer [May - August]
-Available to work typical business hours (Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm)

Candidate Preferences:
-Currently in first or second year of schooling
-Availability and desire to continue working during the semester

Successful candidates must be reliable and able to work independently, in many different environments (lab, greenhouse, field). No prior experience is necessary, but it can contribute to a higher starting wage. A good driving record is strongly desired. Interested candidates must be able to work 30-40 hours per week this summer.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Background knowledge in botany, horticulture, biochemistry, and genetics is desired, but not required. Coursework and/or experience in basic biology and chemistry lab techniques is required.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Carrot crop/seed production, and lab evaluation of plant germplasm in a breeding and genetics program.

Duties include:
-Plant production and data collection in the field and/or greenhouse
-Transplanting, propagation, and pollination of plants for seed production in the field and/or greenhouse
-Cleaning, packaging, and inventory of seed
-Record keeping, data entry, and upkeep
-Lab work, including sample collection, DNA, sugar, and pigment extractions
-Field work, including data collection, planting, harvesting, and occasional weeding

Physical Demands:

The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking or bending. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of a work day) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination. Has dust and pollen exposure.
