Department Overview:
UW Veterinary Care (UWVC) is excited to welcome dedicated students to our Morrie Waud Large Animal Hospital. This vital role will support and assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians/assistants with the 24/7 needs of the hospital.

Minimum: ~10 Maximum: 20 during school/40 during breaks
Schedule:
This position will be part-time during the school year (~ 10-20 hours/week), with possibility for additional hours (up to 40 hrs/week) during summer and school breaks. Schedule: The anticipated schedule will include working shifts during the weekday evenings and weekends; as well as on-call overnights during the week and weekend day and overnights. The student work schedule is completed approximately one-month in advance. Needed hours are listed on a fillable shared document and all students work together as a group to cover shifts according to their schedules. Some holidays and availability during winter break and summer is required. Scheduling and compensation will be further discussed during the hiring process. The training period will occur during the summer.

Qualifications:
Must be currently enrolled in undergraduate, veterinary technician, or veterinary degree program.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Previous handling experience of large animal species preferred, especially equine handling skills.
Position Summary/Job Duties:
• Handling and restraint of various large animal species (equine, bovine, small ruminants, swine, and camelids) • Performing physical exams and providing general nursing care • Collecting laboratory specimens (blood, manure, urine, etc.) and performing simple laboratory testing • Administering medications and fluids • Preparing for emergencies and procedures • Preparing and cleaning equipment • Cleaning of animal care spaces and hospital, and restocking supply areas • Completing and properly documenting basic technical animal care treatments, assessments, and procedures • Learning basic functions of the hospital software systems under guidance
Physical Demands:
• Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds independently • Physical and manual dexterity to perform specialized technical tasks • Must be able to stand for long periods of time; and bend, kneel, squat as needed • Handling and restraint of large animals
