Department Overview:
The Acquisitions department completes behind the scenes library work. This primarily consists of ordering and issuing payment for library collections materials. Much of the work done by acquisitions students is self paced. For students seeking exposure to a typical office environment the Acquisitions department would be a good fit.

Position Summary/Job Duties:
I. Book Searching: Under the direction of full time staff, search incoming gift books, journal issues, and other incoming materials to determine if they are already held in the library collection. Pre-Order searching bibliographic information in Alma to prevent item duplication. For materials received on approval, reporting such duplication. II. Bibliographic Record Creation: OCLC searching in order to import a bibliographic record matching the item or citation in hand. Create brief bibliographic records in Alma if no record exists in OCLC. III. Purchase Order Line Creation and Editing: Create Alma POLs, setting or using appropriate template values for subsequent POL creation. Complete the POL using the ordering information provided by the lead full time staff employee. For POLs created for a shipment in hand, “package” the POLs and create the Purchase Order (PO) in Alma. IV. General Subscription Tasks: Check-in of regular serials issues (magazines, newspapers). Identify and route pertinent notices regarding cessations, subscriptions changes, and vendor updates to appropriate staff. V. Inventory Newly Arrived Shipments: This involves unpacking boxes, confirming receipt of materials, checking the shipment invoice, and making sure items listed were actually received in the shipment. VI. Other Tasks as Assigned: These may include, but are not limited to, moving materials, item and holdings verification, handling scheduled deliveries, and other special projects. Tasks assigned require the use of the Alma and OCLC databases as well as spreadsheet and email programs. OCLC and Alma training provided as necessary. Student assistants can expect to gain knowledge of both the MARC format and library acquisitions. Student Assistants report to the heads of the Monograph and Serials teams and work closely with full time staff in both units.
Physical Demands:
Must be able to stand for an hour at a time. May have to lift 20 lbs on occasion.
