Department Overview:

 Housed within the School of Medicine and Public Health, The Cellular and Molecular Arrhythmia Research Program at the University of Wisconsin is a multi-investigator laboratory involved in a wide range of research projects exploring the molecular function of ion channels in cardiac physiology, pharmacology and disease.

Schedule:

 Scheduling will be determined on an individual basis to accommodate for the student's class schedule. Once the pre-determined schedule has been set, then it's expected the student will maintain consistent hours as animal care responsibilities are time-sensitive and cannot be deferred.

Qualifications:

 Required:
•Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing.
•Ability to handle and work with live laboratory mice in a calm, confident, and humane manner.
•Strong self-organization and time-management skills with the ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively.
•Excellent punctuality and reliability — consistent adherence to scheduled work hours is essential, as animal care responsibilities are time-sensitive and cannot be deferred.
•Availability to commit a minimum of 10 hours per week, with some flexibility in scheduling around class obligations.
•Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate and thorough records.

Preferred:
•Prior experience working with laboratory animals or in a vivarium setting.
•Completion of, or willingness to complete, institutional animal care and use training (e.g., IACUC protocols).
•Familiarity with basic genetics concepts and genotyping workflows.
•Coursework in biology, biomedical sciences, or a related field.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Breeding & Colony Management: Set up and monitor breeding pairs and trios according to established protocols. Track and record litter births, wean pups at appropriate time points, and maintain accurate colony records including pedigree and genotype information. Perform cage changes, health checks, and ensure proper housing conditions in compliance with institutional animal care guidelines.

Genetic Material Collection: Collect tissue samples (e.g., ear punches, tail biopsies) for genotyping purposes using approved techniques. Label, process, and organize samples according to laboratory protocols. Maintain detailed and accurate records of all sample collections and results.

Record Keeping & Organization: Update and maintain colony databases and breeding logs. Communicate colony status, concerns, and inventory needs to the supervising researcher in a timely manner. Monitor and report any signs of illness, distress, or unexpected phenotypes within the colony.

Physical Demands:

Ability to handle and work with live laboratory mice in a calm, confident, and humane manner.
