Department Overview:

This position is with the education team of the Wisconsin Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC). The education team uses examples of materials science and engineering to share the excitement and potential of cutting- edge research with K-12 and public audiences while also teaching fundamental science and engineering concepts. This work is conducted in collaboration with researchers, teachers, community groups, other MRSECs, and academic institutions.

Anticipated Hours Per Week:

Schedule:

The scheduled 20 hours/week will be negotiated by the supervisor and the PA. This position is 20 hours per week as a 50% project assistant appointment which includes tuition remission. If the final candidate is available, there may be a possibility of employment beginning sometime during the summer, at an agreed upon date.

Qualifications:

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate program at UW Madison. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, enthusiastic, willing to accept new projects, and recognize opportunities. They will have proven ability to focus and independently oversee and organize multiple projects simultaneously. Attention to detail with excellent time management, prioritizing, and organizational skills. Possess positive and strong communication skills.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Administrative Functions:
• Manage social media
• Maintain volunteer and participant records
• Maintain and update the education website
• Order supplies
• E-mail reminders to volunteers and program participants
Work with outreach materials:
• Assemble science activity kits
• Update the format of existing activities to align with the Teach Eng website
• Organize and maintain outreach supplies
• Make exhibits and activities based on existing prototypes
Program support
• Assist with communications to teachers in the Research Experiences for Teachers program and other programs as needed
• Reserve rooms for meetings and activities
• Order and manage supplies for teachers
Other similar duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to comfortably lift and move at least 15 lbs. Must be able to comfortably stand and move around for up to 2 hours.
