Department Overview:

The main office of the Department of Biochemistry, located in the Hector F. DeLuca Biochemistry Laboratories Building, provides administrative support to members of the department including faculty, staff, graduate students, undergraduate students, and department visitors.

Schedule:

We are looking for someone to start in May 2026 and to work an average of 15-25 hours per week. Given the specific needs of our office, ideally the student we hire for this position would have availability during the following times:

Mondays: 9:00am - 4:30pm
Thursdays: 1:00pm - 4:30pm
Fridays: 9:00am - 4:30pm

There is potential for extra hours as needed.

Qualifications:

* Available to work a minimum of 15 hours/week during summer 2026
* Current or incoming student in the greater Madison area
* Attention to detail, a strong desire to learn, and excellent communication and collaboration skills

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

*Experience interacting professionally with a range of visitor types in a variety of circumstances
* Effective communication skills in person, in writing, and over the phone
* Attentive to detail, with strong organizational and time-management skills
* Self-motivated and able to work independently to complete tasks and projects
* Dependable and punctual

Position Summary/Job Duties:

* Provide professional and knowledgeable reception support, including greeting visitors, directing inquiries, and serving as initial contact for all visitors
* Answer phones, monitor front desk email, and respond to or refer requests as appropriate
* Sort and distribute physical mail, both within the office and to/from campus locations
* Provide basic office support such as scanning, copying, and maintaining the clean and professional appearance of the front desk, office common areas, and conference rooms
* Manage access to areas of the Biochemical Sciences Complex via Wiscard and physical keys
* Provide basic support to administrative staff as needed, such as assistance coordinating materials, gathering information, and updating internal records
* Opportunities to expand into other areas of support within the department, such as shipping and receiving, glasswash, or other building support

Physical Demands:

* Ability to sort and distribute physical mail, including ability to distribute mail to/from other campus locations.
* Ability to clean and organize the front desk, office common areas, and conference rooms
