Department Overview:
The Global Engagement Office’s aim is to support our School in thinking, working, innovating, and partnering with individuals, communities, and groups around the globe. We also seek to ensure the School of Education is one that celebrates the many perspectives and lived experiences that are present within it. SPMs will work closely with incoming students pre-arrival and in their first weeks on campus by providing one-on-one guidance. SPMs are resourceful student leaders who enhance their peers’ and colleagues’ first month in the School of Education (SoE) by connecting this group of international students with resources and to the campus community culture. The SPMs are concerned with the welcome and support of each individual arriving to Madison and to the SoE at the University.

Schedule:
This will be an approximately 4-week appointment which will run from August 3-31, 2026. Dates may need to be adjusted due to Fall assistantship start dates. The position will entail up to 10 hours per week.

Qualifications:
A successful Student Peer Mentor will: Be a rising School of Education junior, senior, or graduate student who demonstrates previous campus involvement, and leadership and/or peer-student support. Be in good academic and disciplinary standing at the University. Demonstrate an ability to work across cultures. Have experience acclimating to a new country or cultural context (e.g., personal experience as an international student, living overseas for an extended period of time, transitioning from a rural to urban setting or vice versa, etc.). Have a genuine desire to help new students succeed.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Knowledge of the School of Education, campus, and community. The ability to work independently and as part of a team. Organized and able to provide timely follow-up.
Position Summary/Job Duties:
The position responsibilities include providing support and guidance to incoming international students to the School of Education. Specifically, a Student Peer Mentor will: Support all students, and especially international students, regardless of race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or other differences. Demonstrate non-judgmental, thoughtful, and respectful dialogue and decision-making. Be sensitive and empathetic to the challenges that international students and scholars face when arriving to the U.S., Madison, and/or the University for the first time. Be able to be a cooperative, reliable, honest, and enthusiastic team member. Be open to asking for help and seeking guidance when faced with uncertainty. Assist GEO with other updating resources for the SoE international student community.
