Department Overview:

The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center is one of seven federally supported National Primate Research Centers and the only one in the Midwest. The Primate Center is based in the University of Wisconsin-Madison Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. Our mission is to increase understanding of basic primate biology and to improve human and animal health and quality of life through research.

Qualifications:

Highly motivated and responsible undergraduate students. All necessary training will be provided by the WNPRC.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Communication (written and oral), basic software skills (e.g., Google calendar, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), works well both as part of a team and independently.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The SPI Unit provides scientific and operational support for research conducted at the WNPRC. The team helps coordinate and carry out the majority of the Center’s biomedical research studies involving nonhuman primate models, working closely with scientists and research staff across a wide range of projects. The unit is seeking undergraduate students to assist with study execution duties. Students will have the opportunity to learn clinical procedures involving nonhuman primates such as, but not limited to: injection techniques, sample collections (ex. blood draws, swabs), and assist with more advanced procedures (ex. ultrasound imaging, CSF taps etc.)

The WNPRC is a tuberculosis-free environment, therefore testing is required prior to working with nonhuman primates. New hires will be required to have a measles titer within the first week of employment. Depending on the results of the blood test, applicants may need to be immunized

Physical Demands:

Ability to lift 50lbs, willingness to handle biological materials while wearing correct personal protective equipment (PPE), hands-on work with nonhuman primates, general laboratory maintenance, and solution preparation.
