Department Overview:

The Putnam Laboratory is located in Bock Laboratories, home to the Center for Quantitative Cell Imaging, and is part of the Department of Biomolecular Chemistry at the UW–Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. The lab investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying animal development using C. elegans as a model organism using approaches spanning biochemistry, biophysics, and developmental biology. Students joining the lab become part of a collaborative research environment.

Schedule:

10–20 hours per week. Specific days and hours are flexible within the Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM window and will be coordinated with the lab. Once established, the schedule is expected to remain consistent from week to week. This position is available for the summer, with the opportunity to continue into the academic year.

Qualifications:

No prior laboratory experience required, but an interest in laboratory research and a willingness to learn are expected. Background or coursework in biological sciences, chemical sciences, or a related field preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions carefully and consistently. Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment. Ability to work independently on routine tasks once trained. Good communication skills and reliability in maintaining a consistent schedule.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

This position supports the day-to-day operations of an active research laboratory. The student will assist with preparation of laboratory materials, including generating plates for C. elegans growth and preparing growth media. Additional duties include general laboratory maintenance such as glassware washing, refilling carboys, restocking laboratory supplies, and maintaining basic laboratory solutions. Motivated students with an interest in research may have the opportunity to take on expanded research responsibilities over time.

Physical Demands:

This position requires the ability to stand for up to one hour at a time. Applicants must be able to lift and carry at least 10 lbs and maneuver a wheeled laboratory cart weighing up to 50 lbs. Work is performed in a laboratory setting and requires adherence to all applicable safety protocols.
