Department Overview:

The Department of Soil Science, recently renamed the Department of Soil and Environmental Sciences is the oldest and likely most renowned soil science department in the USA, and perhaps even in the world. We are home to degrees in soil and environmental sciences. Our department’s research mission includes cycling of water, energy, elements and the sustainability of natural and managed ecosystems. Our environmental research and education, focuses on the solid-liquid interfaces, transformation, and fate of current and emerging contaminants in soil from industrial, urban, and agricultural sources.

Schedule:

Monday through Friday with variable hours for a total of ~20 hours/week

Qualifications:

• A strong desire to help with conducting research.
• Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work 20 hours/week in rain or sunshine.
• Experience with Excel or other data management software (e.g. google sheets) and
knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Demonstrated interest in agricultural, environmental, or soil science research
- Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail
- Ability to follow detailed protocols and maintain accurate records
Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel (or similar data
management tools), Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a research team
- Effective time management skills and ability to balance multiple tasks

Position Summary/Job Duties:

- Collect soil and plant tissue samples at field research sites
- Assist with preparation and processing of soil and plant samples in the laboratory
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of laboratory and workspace
- Record and organize research data accurately
- Assist with setup, maintenance, and breakdown of field and lab
experiments/demonstrations
- Follow established research protocols and safety procedures
- Support general research activities as assigned by the supervisor

Physical Demands:

- Ability to work up to 20 hours per week in outdoor field conditions, including exposure to
varying weather (heat, humidity, rain, and sun)
- Ability to walk over uneven terrain and stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to approximately 40 pounds
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as sample collection, soil processing, and
laboratory preparation
- Ability to safely handle soil and plant materials in both field and laboratory environments
