Department Overview:

The Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center (WIPAC) is a research center in the University of Wisconsin–Madison Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. WIPAC specializes in Physics and Astronomy research, with responsibility for the South Pole IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a kilometer-scale neutrino detector located at the South Pole. More information can be found at http://icecube.wisc.edu/. WIPAC also leads and participates in several other research collaborations both nationally and internationally. The Administration team provides Human Resources, Accounting, Purchasing, Travel, Events & Outreach, and Research Administration support for WIPAC.

Flexible schedule, Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm, with occasional weekend or evening hours required.

Qualifications:

● Must be a current undergraduate student at UW–Madison
● Desire to learn about astroparticle physics
● Enthusiasm for and ability to effectively communicate scientific concepts to a general audience in engaging and creative ways
● Students must have a valid driver’s license and ability to become a UW authorized driver for the department vehicle
● Students must pass a Criminal Background Check

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Required:
● Ability to work as a member of a dynamic team, and to interact with the public, youth, and scientists.
● Self-motivated, organized, responsible, and able to handle a flexible schedule and work environment.
● Ability to use Microsoft and/or Google suite of tools
● Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred:
● Coursework and/or experience in education, especially with a focus on inquiry-based and hands-on learning
● Ability to follow directions and learn new software programs

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center seeks a student employee to assist with various outreach activities and hosted events. This position will include front-desk reception duties, hosted event set-up and clean-up, and participation outreach activities including contributing to communications and in-person events. Duties will include working with staff and scientists to deliver hands-on activities to engage learners of all ages in WIPAC science, helping plan and facilitate outreach events, and leading set-up and break-down of WIPAC booths at events. Assistance with hosted events, including catering set-up and clean-up, may be requested. This position requires assisting with administrative tasks.

Tasks will include:
● Facilitating event set-up and take-down
● Facilitating education and outreach activities at a variety of programs including but not limited to field trips, science festivals, family science nights, webinars, after school programs, etc.
● Assisting with event planning and logistics
● Tracking programmatic metrics
● Helping with miscellaneous Education & Outreach program operations
● Assisting with outreach communications projects as they arise.
● Checking the mail and receiving packages at the reception desk
● Assisting with setup and cleanup for hosted events
● Entering data into Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets
● Other office duties as assigned
