Department Overview:

The Global Health Institute's (GHI) Communications Department consists of the communications director and communications intern. The Department reports to the Associate Director of Strategic Partnerships & Development. The communications intern will have access to their own office, work computer, and a shared printer. The communications intern will have the opportunity to work on a variety of communications projects in collaboration with the Communications Director while also working independently. The communications intern will also be asked to represent GHI when sending all communication efforts to our audiences, including our advisory committee, board of directors, and all audiences, as well as at all GHI online and in-person events.

Qualifications:

To be eligible for this position, you must be currently enrolled at a college or university.

Students in Journalism/Life Sciences Communication/Mass Communications with experience in global health/environmental health preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

•Excellent communication skills, especially listening, writing, editing and design capabilities.
•Excellent research, time management skills, detail-oriented, and able to quickly organize and track information.
•Hands on experience with social media, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, BlueSky, and LinkedIn. Experience with Hootsuite a plus.
•Hands on experience with a variety of electronic tools including MailChimp, Adobe, Microsoft Office, WordPress, Canva, and various AI platforms.
•Experience gathering data and summarizing findings into briefs and/or reports.
•Ability to handle sensitive/confidential information.
•Computer proficiency required, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom, and some database experience preferred.
•Demonstrated ability to work independently within deadlines.
•Curiosity and enthusiasm for global health and GHI, and a desire to share the mission and vision to attract support for the Institute.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

A well-rounded communications intern will take the lead on social media platforms, contribute to website and outreach efforts and produce a variety of materials from news stories to infographics. The position begins immediately and will continue through the 2026-27 academic year. During the academic year, the intern will be expected to work 10 to 12 hours per week, depending on workload and class schedule. More hours are available in the summer. Pay is $15 an hour.

Primary Duties:
•In collaboration with the Communications Director, assist with planning and executing GHI’s social media presence (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, BlueSky, YouTube).
•In collaboration with the Communications Director, develop and execute GHI’s Journeys: Global Health Thru A Student Lens Vlogs.
•Post GHI events to campus calendars, including GHI and UW-Madison.
•Assist with the production of Events+ newsletters and the annual report.
•Write and edit content, including news stories, feature articles, news releases and development and website materials.
•Assist with website maintenance, including posting new content and making existing content more user friendly.
•Perform administrative services such as word processing, proofreading, fact checking, organizing photo files, preparing information for distribution, creating graphics, etc.
•Help with GHI virtual and live events, from registration to marketing, managing online logistics, and live Tweeting.
•Other ad hoc projects that ensure GHI communications run smoothly.
