Department Overview:

 This internship opportunity provides valuable hands-on leadership, event facilitation, and project management experience while encouraging global awareness and cultural understanding on campus and in the larger Madison community.

International Student Services (ISS) serves students on F-1 and J-1 student visas. We provide advising, activities, and advocacy for international students on the UW-Madison campus and in the community. International Student Services recognizes international students as a vital part of UW–Madison. We are committed to educating and empowering students to make informed decisions and working with them to advocate for a globally inclusive community. The Global Engagement Team seeks to intentionally and holistically support international students, campus, and the Madison community through coordinating events and programs that foster a sense of belonging, promote advocacy, and enhance global engagement.

Schedule:

 Weekly scheduled shifts that are decided between student intern and their supervisor plus some evening and weekend work for events. These evening and weekend shifts will be scheduled in advance so you can plan accordingly.

Qualifications:

 1.Current student (undergraduate or graduate)
2. Strong intercultural communication skills (including written and verbal)
3. Ability to work with a diverse clientele and multiple competing deadlines
4. Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends 
5. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Outlook Email & Calendar, Teams, Powerpoint, and Excel
6. Intercultural experience or perspective

*Preferred Qualifications*
1. Experience working in an office or in student leadership positions
2. Experience facilitating discussions with diverse audiences
3. Experience with public speaking and giving presentations
4. Experience working with Canva
5. Familiar with social media platforms (Meta, Instagram, Facebook)
6. Bilingual or multilingual
7. Experience living in another country 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

1. Can write a professional, clear and concise email to a wide variety of audiences
2. Can solve a problem and brainstorm solutions on the fly
3. Attention to detail and organized
4. Self-motivated with a proactive mindset
5. Ability to learn new software/programs
6. Ability to brainstorm ideas and work to make them happen

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Facilitate contact between international student volunteers and requesters to arrange successful presentations

Monitor International Reach email inbox and social media accounts

Maintain and update program databases on Microsoft Excel

Utilize data to create an annual program summary report and presentation

Recruit new international student volunteers and presentation requesters

Interview and select new cohort of International Reach ambassadors

Market the program to potential requesters on campus and in the community

Create promotional materials, including flyers and social media content

Assist Reach staff in engaging Reach ambassadors in an effective/meaningful way 

Contribute ideas and help design new initiatives and activities that promote intercultural learning and cross-cultural communication 

Collect feedback from requesters and student ambassadors

Event Support

Help with set-up / tech support at ISS programs (especially after-hours events) 

Encouraging participation in events

Participate in monthly team training and retreats

Meet weekly with assigned supervisor and complete semesterly performance reviews and goal setting 

Other projects based on candidate’s own talents and interests 

Help with events including (but not limited to): International Reach Training Socials, Sun Prairie Multicultural Festival, Madison International Festival, International Student Welcome and Information Fair (ISWIF), Game Night, Practicing English and Cultural Exchange (PEACE), Graduation Celebration, Peer Navigator events, Global Café and other affiliated student organization events. 

Physical Demands:

Able to sit for long period in an office or stand for a few hours at an event. Ability to lift 15 lbs and push/pull a cart would be helpful.
