Department Overview:

This paid position will provide digital communications support to the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies which builds partnerships to synergize and sustain excellence in the interdisciplinary research, teaching, and service that make the University of Wisconsin-Madison a world leader in addressing environmental challenges.

Qualifications:

• Demonstrated proficiency in graphic design and video editing, with experience creating polished digital content for professional, academic, or organizational audiences
• Strong understanding of visual composition, typography, branding, and designing content for different digital platforms and audiences
• Experience producing and editing short-form video content, including social media reels, promotional videos, interviews, or similar multimedia projects
• Experience writing clear, concise, engaging content, proofreading, and editing.
• Experience designing digital and print graphics, such as social media graphics, flyers, posters, promotional materials, and other branded communications
• Experience using and managing social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram) for professional or organizational purposes
• Familiarity with WordPress and marketing automation tools (e.g., Eloqua)
• Self-motivated, proactive, and able to take initiative while working both independently and collaboratively
• Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
• Proficiency with Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams

Portfolio or work samples demonstrating graphic design and/or video editing experience strongly preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Strong visual communication, graphic design, and video editing skills are essential, along with the ability to create engaging digital content for varied platforms and audiences.

The successful candidate should be organized, detail-oriented, creative, and able to manage multiple projects independently and collaboratively. Strong communication, problem-solving, and time-management skills are required, as well as the ability to work professionally with staff, faculty, and students. Interest or coursework in environmental studies is a plus.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

As a member of the strategic communications team, the successful candidate will have access to a number of learning opportunities including:

Goal A: 75% Digital Content Creation. Assist the strategic communications team with the following: A1. Creation of digital content for the Institute, Centers, Departments (APO, Professional Programs) and Institute initiatives/programs. This may include photography, video, multimedia design, and writing. A2. Attend Nelson events and capture photography and/or video to support digital content creation and amplify across platforms. A3. Take a lead in building a library of faculty/staff head shots and “in-the-field” photos.

Goal B: 10% Social Media Coordination. B1. Assist in writing and curating content for the Nelson Institute social media platforms. B2. Develop and maintain social media editorial calendar. B3. Monitor metrics across platforms and work with strategic communications team to tailor message, select channel, and frequency.

Goal C: 10% Writing and Web Support. C1. Take a lead in writing and publishing within Word Press quick-turn stories that highlight faculty awards, grants, research, etc.

Goal D: 5% Miscellaneous Support. D1. Other duties as needed to support the priorities and projects assigned by the strategic communications team.
