Department Overview:

Established in 1909, the Spooner Agricultural Research Station is a 388-acre facility in Washburn County operated by the University of Wisconsin–Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS). Serving as a hub for agricultural and horticultural producers as well as home gardeners across northwest Wisconsin, the station specializes in agronomy and horticulture crop production research across 220+ tillable acres of sandy loam soils. The station is also home to the Teaching & Display Garden—one of the few All-America Selections (AAS) display gardens in Wisconsin.

Qualifications:

Coursework and/or related training and hands-on experience in agronomy, horticulture, biology, plant science, plant pathology, entomology, soil science, agricultural education, or a closely related field.

Self-motivated and willingness to work independently with minimal direct supervision.

Ability to work outdoors in varying summer weather conditions and perform physical tasks associated with field and garden work.

Valid state driver’s license and ability to obtain UW Risk Management Drivers coverage.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

All necessary skills and knowledge will be taught on the job

A positive attitude and commitment to learning about applied agricultural research, horticultural management, and community extension outreach.

Willingness to work hard and contribute positively to the work team.

Skills in communicating with fellow co-workers, the management team, faculty, and visitors in a professional manner.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Assist research staff and station management in laying out, planting, and maintaining agronomy and horticulture field trials and the All-America Selections Teaching & Display Garden.

Perform routine crop and garden management tasks, including weeding, pruning, irrigation setup, and fertilizer applications.

Work alongside the Demonstration Garden Manager and station staff to prepare for and host public outreach events, including hands-on workshops, summer youth educational programs, field days, garden talks, and the annual Twilight Garden Tour.

Engage with local growers, Master Gardeners, students, and community visitors during station tours and events.

Other responsibilities will include maintenance of the Research Station property, operating small tillage and mowing equipment or other duties as assigned.
