Position Summary
Columbia University is establishing a service unit to serve as an internal online program manager, supporting a platform for delivering online courses, programs, and experiences across all schools at the University. This new unit will deliver in-house services across marketing, recruiting, instructional design, media production, learner services and more. This position offers a unique opportunity to help shape the future of education, strengthening Columbia’s position as a global leader in the digital education space.
The platform manager will work under the supervision of the Co-Director to provide platform support for courses delivered through the University’s online learning stack, and to shape internal team processes that leverage technology to create new efficiencies. This inaugural position will also have the chance to develop solutions directly affecting the quality and improvement of online courses. Ideal candidates will have an enthusiasm for investigating, assessing, recommending, deploying, and evaluating educational technologies, as well as experience interacting directly with senior-level personnel.
Responsibilities
Support & Platform Development
- Provide support for Columbia Online’s core educational technology stack (LMS, platform, payment systems etc.)
- Liaise with Columbia University Information Technology (CUIT) team on the implementation and oversight of help desk and ticketing system(s) to address issues and requests from learners
- Collaborate with Columbia University IT on identifying and resolving bugs and issues on the learning platform and technology stack
- Partner with Columbia University IT on prioritizing features and developing product roadmap, feature updates, and timelines
- Lead the quality assurance (QA) process and workflows
- Develop and maintain a content schedule for platform updates
Communications & Engagement
- Review, edit, and improve existing copy for PR, communications, webpages, and more
- Develop new content and copy for websites, course landing pages, and internal and external communications including email, drafting press releases, and content for social channels
- Manage website content and work closely with internal teams and stakeholders to support Columbia Online’s digital presence
Project Management
- Communicate highly-technical information to broadly diverse audiences.
- Work closely with collaborative cross-functional teams to deploy and optimize educational technologies for courses and programs
- Research, deploy, and manage project-management tools (e.g. Jira, Asana, etc.)
Research & Support
- Collaborate with instructional-design staff to match educational goals and objectives with the appropriate technology and delivery methods.
- Design pilots and develop evaluation frameworks for testing and adopting educational technologies, including evaluations of user privacy and accessibility practices.
- Establish and manage relationships with third-party educational-technology vendors.
- Compose succinct, easy-to-follow technical instructions for the use of educational technologies.
- Perform R&D identifying and incubating instructional technologies and platforms that have the potential to improve teaching and learning at the University and beyond.
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies and best practices in the field.
- Research and deploy support systems for end users (e.g., helpdesk, live chat, knowledge base, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent required, and a minimum of five years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Advanced scripting/web development experience a plus (e.g., application frameworks, such as Angular/React; Node.js; jQuery)
- Strong front-end development skills in HTML, HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, responsive design, accessible design, version control (Git), and testing & debugging.
- Video/audio production experience working with university faculty in technology training
- Familiarity with WCAG guidelines and experience in evaluating content for web accessibility
- Knowledge of instructional design or learning theories
- Multimedia authoring experience
- Experience with Web APIs (including REST or SOAP) and authentication protocols
- UI/UX design experience
- LTI development experience
Other Requirements
- Strong communication, collaboration, and analytical skills.
- Experience developing and supporting online courses and programs.
- A solid and current knowledge of instructional technologies and media tools.
- Experience with writing copywriting, editing, and managing communications
- Experience developing content within learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Brightspace, edX, Coursera)
- Experience with web-based conferencing and productivity tools
