The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary
The Center for Science and Society brings together a wide variety of scholars and practitioners in the human, social, and natural sciences from around Columbia's campus and the New York City metropolitan area to support interdisciplinary research, teaching, and outreach about the roles of science, technology, medicine, and public health in past and present societies.
Reporting to the Associate Director and Faculty Director of the Center for Science and Society (CSS), the Program and Communications Manager will work together with CSS staff to implement programming and activities, support CSS students and affiliates, and foster relationships with new partners. The incumbent will provide general administrative support and be responsible for 1) planning, developing, and executing the departmental communications strategy; 2) serving as a primary point-of-contact and liaison for all internal and external partners, including students, staff, faculty, and external entities; 3) managing the Center’s grant awarding process and supporting grantees; and 4) working with students, faculty, and staff on a wide range of internal and external programming and research projects, including the Center’s research Cluster the Making and Knowing Project, the Presidential Scholars in Society and Neuroscience program, and the Community-Driven Co-production of Knowledge initiative.
Responsibilities
- Serving as a primary point of contact and liaison for all internal and external partners, including students, staff, faculty, and external entities
- Managing the Center’s grant awarding process and supporting grantees, working with the Center’s Executive Committee
- Working with students, faculty, and staff on a wide range of internal and external programming and research projects, including event planning, scheduling, budgeting, curricular development activities
- As needed, staffing events and helping other Center staff in coordinating setup, breakdown, and real-time troubleshooting of sponsored events. Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including some early mornings and late evenings as events require
- Planning, developing, and executing the departmental communications strategy and public relations campaigns
- Overseeing design and production of public-facing media content, including the websites for the Center, the Making and Knowing Project, and PSSN; monthly newsletters; social media content; and other communications and marketing materials
- Serving as key owner of the Center’s email, websites, and social media accounts, growing and analyzing the Center’s online presence (including accessibility and analytics from Eventbrite, Mailchimp, Zoom, Google Analytics)
- Creating and managing set-up and registration for in-person and Zoom webinar events and update/link events to the website; creating communications toolkits for major events
- Curating and managing the Center’s websites, bringing a strategic vision to maximize impact and gain new supporters
- Working with other Center staff to initiate and process financial transactions such as p-card reconciliation, voucher processing, and pulling financial reports
- Overseeing the Center’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts
- Hiring, training, scheduling, and assigning day-to-day tasks for the Center’s work-study students and interns
- Performing other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent required
- Two years of related work experience is required, preferably in a communications role within a university or non-profit setting
- Interest in building bridges across and outside the University, and working with affiliates and students to facilitate their projects
- Excellent organizational, written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills essential
- Capable of energetic independent work, exercising independent judgment and initiative, and coordinating multiple responsibilities, often with competing priorities and deadlines
- Able to work successfully both individually and as part of a team
- Must be flexible and willing to take on new responsibilities within a growing program.
- Some evening work or early morning work is required
- Knowledge of financial and general accounting principles required
- Strong knowledge of computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email programs, internet browsers, etc.), as well as the capacity to learn all relevant administrative systems used by Columbia University
Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree or equivalent, especially in Administration or Non-Profit Management. Background in digital communications, with specific competencies in social media marketing, website content development, and Google Analytics preferred. Existing knowledge of and experience with Columbia University websites, financial policies, and financial systems (ARC) is a plus.
