The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
 

Position Summary

The Institute of Comparative Medicine (ICM) Clinical Veterinarian is an integral and highly regarded component of the biomedical research effort at Columbia University. This individual works closely with veterinary, medical and research specialists as part of a multi- disciplinary team managing various animal species in a biomedical environment. The clinical veterinarian's role encompasses veterinary care of multiple species and ensures that systems and processes meet standards established by ICM administration. The incumbent will be involved in the management of research projects to ensure alignment of research activities and regulatory standards. The incumbent will assure that all tasks are completed in a timely and cost effective manner while adhering to applicable federal agency and Columbia University policies and procedures. This individual maintains performance levels consistent with and according to Columbia University ICM standards. 


Responsibilities

  • Training: Develops training materials and conducts hands-on training for staff and investigators; provides surgical, anesthesia and technical support to investigators through animal model development, study conduct and training; and conducts didactic training of personnel and investigators in the appropriate care and use of laboratory animals.
  • Regulatory compliance: Provides guidance to investigators on protocol development and regulatory compliance; performs veterinary consultations on IACUC protocols; reviews animal use protocols and assists with facility inspections and programmatic evaluations; and works with the IACUC on post approval monitoring and protocol compliance.
  • Veterinary care: Manages the health and wellbeing of various laboratory animal species including rodents, non-human primates, farm animals and aquatic species; delivers veterinary care through accurate diagnosis and treatment; develops and manages the clinical care program for all surgical cases; creates pre, intra and post-operative care plans in consultation with investigators; and establishes anesthesia, analgesia, and euthanasia protocols for various laboratory animal species.
  • Research support: Collaborates with research team on large animal model development, surgical planning, bioimaging and data interpretation; attends laboratory research meetings as necessary to assist with model development, interpret clinical and experimental data, and promote regulatory compliance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • DVM/VMD degree from an AVMA accredited institution or a BVSc; licensed to practice veterinary medicine in NY and have training or experience in laboratory animal medicine.
  • ACLAM certification or board eligibility is required.
  • Prior experience in an academic environment and advanced research training (MS, PhD, MPH etc.) with nonhuman primate experience is highly desirable.
