The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
 

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Chief Advance Practice Provider (APP), the variable-hours-officer physician assistant (per diem) will provide service to the Emergency Medicine Department at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Allen Hospital. Schedule will be arranged by Chief Advanced Practice Practitioner and hours are not to exceed 20 hours per week.

Individual will perform a variety of functions and technical procedures necessary for admission, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and outcome evaluation of patients and participate in performance improvement, research and educational activities. Day, evening, weeknight, weekend and holiday shifts required.


Responsibilities

  • Obtain patients' history, perform physical examinations, order and evaluate appropriate laboratory, radiographic and electrocardiographic studies.
  • Review laboratory results and other clinical information pertinent to patient health, order appropriate tests and other ancillary services as needed, and develop care plans for patients.
  • Assist in the management of medical and surgical emergencies.
  • Assist the attending physician on any procedure falling within the Physician Assistant's scope of practice.
  • Initiate subspecialty consultations or evaluations.
  • Counsel and instruct patients and their families.
  • Render appropriate care in the presence of a life-threatening emergency when a physician is unavailable and document all care rendered in accordance with ER policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all medical records and notes are countersigned by attending physician.
  • Upon discharge, notes discharge summaries, prescriptions and any referrals on patient charts. Informs patients of the necessary post-discharge care instructions.
  • Functions within the standards of practice established by American Nurses Association Standards of Clinical Practice. Acts within the policies and procedures of the University, hospital, division, and clinical department.  
  • Conforms to all applicable HIPAA, billing compliance and safety guidelines.  
  • Will perform other duties as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires bachelor’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program or equivalent in education, plus four years of related experience.

Other Requirements

  • Must possess New York State professional license; board certification by the NCCPA; NYS DEA registration, and BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification.
  • Must successfully complete systems training requirements.
