The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary

Community Impact is part of University Life, which is a central division at the University focused on enhancing the student experience across Columbia’s 17 schools and colleges. University Life programs and initiatives are informed by three core values: inclusion & belonging, student well-being, and sexual respect. The University Life division consists of four departments: Student Life, Center for Student Success and Intervention, Religious Life, and Community Impact.

Community Impact (CI) is a nonprofit organization, housed on the campus of Columbia University, that has been meeting the critical needs of low-income residents in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx for over 40 years while developing strong student leaders who have a passion for service.  CI offers Adult Education Programs, Emergency Food, and Youth Programs to service the community.  

The Development and Marketing Associate reports to the Assistant Development Director and is an integral part of the Development and Communications team at Community Impact. This role performs tasks related to all aspects of development and communicates with multiple constituents to raise funds for programs. Additionally, the position works to elevate the branding and communications for Community Impact. 


Responsibilities

Development Responsibilities 

  • Assists with the creation of high-impact development and marketing collateral that educates donors and provides them with informative, targeted marketing touchpoints; 
  • Plays a key role in creating the Annual Campaigns (including newsletters, social media, new platforms, etc.) that help drive donations to CI programs. 
  • Researches prospective donors; researches and analyzes statistical data; and drafts and compiles proposals and reports based on concepts and parameters established by the Assistant Director, to foundations, corporations, government agencies, and major donors. Helps to draft funding proposals to various funding entities; 
  • Manages and coordinates the donor/foundation/grant acknowledgment process, including drafting templates and letters, mailing acknowledgments in-house, and tracking progress;
  • Coordinates, compiles, and routes applications and reports for grants (e.g., government, foundations, and corporations)
  • Guides donor stewardship efforts across Community Impact. Draft administrative memorandums, letters of correspondence, requests for gift renewals, and thank you and acknowledgment letters. Respond to donor questions and/or direct them appropriately to ensure effective day-to-day operations;
  • Liaises with Business Manager and Program Managers on a frequent basis to request/provide donor data needed for financial reporting and other purposes;
  • Assists with annual fundraisers and campaigns such as the Annual Benefit and Year-End Campaign, to execute effective events and meet financial targets; and
  • Schedules and staff development site visits and meetings including creating presentations. 

 Marketing and Communications Responsibilities

  • Serves on the Communications Team to help plan and carry out the vision for an integrated communications strategy for the organization, including conceiving, writing, editing, and producing original content for electronic and print media such as newsletters, program flyers, and social media posts; 
  • Maintains the CI website and Google Suite as well as social media initiatives, including the CI YouTube account and Instagram page;  
  • Manages various mailings related to development events and activities compiling and ensuring accuracy; 
  • Maintains electronic brand guidelines for all stakeholders;  Works with students and staff to ensure that guidelines are current and being used;
  • Collaborates with Program Managers on all CI branding efforts to create effective collateral materials that drive awareness;
  • Works with Student Leaders and Volunteers to teach fundraising and development best practices to our student executive development team and manage their progress;
  • Oversee work-study, casual, and volunteer employees in the Assistant Director’s absence Performs other related duties as assigned or requested, including but not limited to, data management and ad-hoc projects across CI’s various teams. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required. 
  • Two - four years of related experience is required.
  • Successful candidates should possess excellent writing and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to organize and lead projects to completion and to work independently and effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining flexibility, judgment, attention to detail, and commitment to collaboration and high standards of service.
  • A writing sample or creative portfolio will be requested during the interview process
  • Strong computer skills required, including working knowledge of Google Suite and Canva. Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge, MailChimp, Stripe, Network4Good, and/or basic web design skills preferred (Drupal or other platform).
  • Must be detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to work independently, and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously in a high-volume environment, while discreetly handling highly sensitive and confidential information.  
  • Some evening hours may be required. Interest in fundraising with some fundraising or office experience preferred.
  • Superb communication skills are required.
