The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
 

Position Summary

Reporting to the Public Safety Lieutenant and Senior Sergeant, the Sergeant may be assigned to either the Morningside, Manhattanville or CUIMC campus depending on operational needs of the department. He or she supervises uniformed Public Safety personnel and contract guard staff whose operational duties include access control, foot and mobile patrol, fixed indoor and outdoor posts, and order maintenance at special events.


Responsibilities

  • The incumbent may be called upon to perform patrol duty on foot, in an automobile or on bicycle. As such, the applicant may be required to pass a physical fitness job standards test.
  • The Sergeant, working on a computer-aided dispatch platform, handles response to emergency situations across the campus and directs the activities of responding Public Safety Officers. He or she will also determine when additional resources are needed and coordinates their response with other Departments.
  • The Sergeant is responsible for coordinating activities via a computer-aided dispatch system. When assigned as desk officer in the Operations Center, the Sergeant is responsible for maintaining and operating a host of complex computers and alarm systems, as well as serving as radio dispatcher for Security Officers and handling walk-in requests for assistance/information.
  • The Sergeant must demonstrate the qualities of leadership under stressful conditions. Must be able to train security staff to respond to all security, medical, and fire emergencies and initiate appropriate established response procedures. The Sergeant prepares reports, reviews subordinates' reports and other paperwork, maintains accurate and complete logs and records, patrols, staffs the Operations Desk and prepares performance evaluations.
  • The Sergeant must be able to maintain and safeguard equipment essential to the efficient operation of the Department. He or she should be skilled at the use of a computer keyboard, as well as with other electronic equipment, and have knowledge of computer aided dispatch systems.
  • The Sergeant should be able to communicate effectively and clearly with staff and visitors in a professional manner. He or she should demonstrate a high level of ethics and should maintain a professional appearance. The Sergeant is considered Essential Personnel and will be assigned to work either a day shift (8 am to 4 pm), an evening shift (4 pm to Midnight) or an overnight shift (Midnight to 8 am) depending on the needs of the department, or other tours as required by the position. The position requires the Sergeant to work holidays, weekends, nights, and a variety of shifts and double shifts when circumstances warrant.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma and/or its equivalent required. A minimum of two (2) years of related work experience in law enforcement, military or security is required.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License and a NYS Guard License

Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience preferred. Preference will be given to those applicants with demonstrated leadership skills, with educational accomplishments beyond high school, and with working knowledge of computer-aided dispatch systems.

Other Requirements

  • Excellent oral/written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills required.
  • Applicant must demonstrate the ability to review an incident fact pattern and prepare a clear, concise, written report of the event including all relevant facts.
  • Also, since this position requires extensive computer use, the applicant must demonstrate the ability to use multiple proprietary computer applications simultaneously.
  • The Sergeant must possess and maintain a valid NYS Guard's license, or have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid NYS Guard's license.
  • The Sergeant should be able to engage in strenuous physical activity, including walking, climbing stairs, as well as standing or sitting for long periods of time.
  • The Sergeant must also be willing and able to perform duty in inclement weather conditions. He or she is required to possess and maintain a valid driver's license from the State of their legal residence.
