The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
 

Position Summary

The Augustus C. Long Health Sciences Library (HSL) aims to be the focal point for the exchange of biomedical and scientific information that is vital to the broad range of aspirations and activities within the Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC).

Reporting to the Programs Director (PD), the Instructional Design Specialist (IDS) will play a critical role in the design and deployment of educational programs, including designing learning content, instructional materials, and assessment.  The IDS will partner with the Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and other key operational staff to identify, develop and execute educational content delivery strategies to address the existing and emerging needs at CUIMC.  The IDS will guide the integration of multiple adjacent functional collaborations so that curriculum development and instructional design align with HSL mission and initiatives.


Responsibilities

  • Essential duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

    • Leading the identification, assessment, and development of skills and competencies at CUIMC through needs analysis and curriculum development. Sharing feedback and insights to align skills and knowledge with CUIMC needs and goals.
    • Identifying opportunities for new learning content or programs and proactively pursue them.
    • Partnering with SMEs to identify goals, audiences and objectives; collaborating with SMEs to scope, design, and test training to ensure that format and delivery support the needs of the learner.
    • Designing engaging web-based and instructor-led courses in collaboration with SMEs and through application of adult learning theories/pedagogy; employing instructional design strategies that anticipate future needs.
    • Partnering with SMEs and Digital Content Editor to design and produce instructional materials, including but not limited to eLearning courses and curricula, short video tutorials, written how-to guides, course outlines, storyboards, and live trainings.
    • Writing task-based assessment questions that measure objectives; contribute to periodic reporting on the learning programs; responding to feedback on the professional learning materials and assisting in engaging CUIMC community.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in relevant field with certification in instructional design is required.
  • At least three (3) years of demonstrated experience in instructional design and curriculum design, including working directly with Subject Matter Experts on the design and delivery of online and hybrid courses is required, or equivalency in education, training, or experience.
  • Experience leading teams and projects, managing multiple teams and work-streams across various projects and clients.
  • Ability to design high-quality educational solutions that meet learning objectives.  
  • Demonstrated expertise in the delivery of high-quality educational content with attention to detail and across of a variety of media.
  • Experience using learning technology tools and project management applications; aptitude for learning and applying new technologies quickly and effectively.
  • Ability to work consistently and constructively in a fast-paced, highly matrixed environment.
  • Experience with e-Learning authoring tools such as Adobe Captivate/Photoshop/Premiere/Illustrator; Articulate; Panopto; Camtasia; Echo360 or similar products, as well as Learning Management Systems (e.g. Courseworks/Canvas, Blackboard, etc.).
  • Knowledge of assessment and evaluation methods and experience designing and implementing assessment strategies.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, especially with problem solving and relationship building.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in instructional design, educational technology, education or related field is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of universal design and creation of ADA compliant online courses is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with members (e.g., faculty, clinicians, researchers, etc.) of an academic and/or research institution.
  • Knowledge of topics related to the health and biomedical sciences.
