The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary
The Columbia Journalism School is seeking a creative story-teller to promote brand visibility and internal and external initiatives. The Digital Content Specialist reports to the Communications Manager, with primary responsibilities including supporting the School’s online presence and executing communication tactics.
Day-to-day tasks include copywriting, designing simple graphics, managing social media and outreach, launching email campaigns, researching media coverage and promoting stakeholder efforts. The Digital Content Specialist may also perform administrative duties as needed.
The preferred candidate will be up-to-date with the latest digital technology and social media trends. They should have excellent communication skills, and be able to express the CJS mission with creativity and care.
Responsibilities
Content Creation
- Develop content ideas for the CJS social media channels and website, and prepare for publication of the content by writing copy, finding photos and creating graphics as needed
- Meet with CJS staff to identify opportunities to highlight upcoming initiatives
- Create articles for the news section of the website, including event coverage, faculty and student profiles, interviews and press releases
- Maintain monthly online content calendar in collaboration with the Communications Manager
Social Media Development
- Support CJS’s social presence across Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Bluesky and more, and encourage consistently high levels of traffic and engagement
- Create, curate, and schedule social content to drive engagement in collaboration with the Communications Manager
- Explore and execute new social media strategies to grow presence on current social channels and develop new avenues
- Partner with stakeholders throughout the School, including the Admissions department, to maximize communication of key initiatives, events and achievements throughout digital ecosystem
- Elevate CJS as a thought leader on issues related to journalism, current events, research and education
Website Maintenance
Support day-to-day content development for the CJS website, including news article writing, monthly content audits and regular updates of faculty bios, course details and student work
- Review, approve, update and publish site pages based on edits submitted by various stakeholders within the School including Prizes, Academic Affairs, and Career Development
Support the Communications Manager on major website projects including the development of new features post-CMS migration Events and External Outreach
Take photos at School events and post to social media and other communications vehicles as needed
- Liaise with the CJS Events team and other stakeholders to ensure calendar requests and descriptions are approved and published in a timely manner
- Work with Events, other stakeholders and the Communications Manager to update the School’s lobby monitors and vitrine on College Walk
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent related experience required.
- Up to 2 years of related experience.
- High degree of understanding of the latest digital technology and social media strategies.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, Canva, Slack and Drupal.
- Knowledge in measuring impact and conversions for web and social media
- Strong writing and copy-editing skills.
- Prior experience in communications, as writing for multiple platforms is essential for this role.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
- Experience with Google Analytics or similar tools.
- Familiarity with search engine optimization (SEO) best practices.
- Experience in higher education or a similar industry.
