The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary

The Promise Program at Columbia University Medical Center provides underserved children and adolescents with learning disabilities and related disorders with quality neuropsychological evaluations. We are hiring a Senior Education Coordinator (EC) to assist families with understanding the evaluation process, interpreting report findings and navigating the school system to assure that necessary services are obtained. The Senior EC will attend parent conferences, CSE and IEP meetings, and follow up with families as needed, including follow-ups at one and two years post-evaluation. The Senior EC will be expected to collaborate with DOE schools as well as private, parochial and charter schools in the surrounding community. The Senior EC will also collect information from school districts, and work closely with other Advocates For Children (including attending training seminars), and other agencies, to obtain special education services and needed school placements from school districts. In addition to assuring follow-up for families that have received evaluations at the Promise Program, the Senior EC will be help maintain a database of all children seen in the program, as well as a system to assure that children benefitted from completed evaluations. The Senior EC will design and delineate information and relevant resources to parents, as well as work closely with other members of the EC team to promote parent empowerment. The Senior EC will assist in training junior Education Advocacy staff, including Education Coordinator, Family Navigator, clinical staff, and clinic volunteers on advocacy-related topics and process.


Responsibilities

  • ADVOCACY-DIRECT PATIENT SERVICE: Maintain patient advocacy caseload. Attend Post Promise IEP (and other IEP’s/meetings as needed to obtain needed services. Escalate cases to CSE/DOE as necessary. Tour Non Public Schools or alternate school placements with parent. Take over complicated cases from supervisees.
  • TRAINING: Assist in training Education Coordinator, Family Navigator and junior staff. Monitor and supervise clinic volunteers to assist with follow up and data collection.
  • FOLLOW UP AND RECORD COLLECTION & ENTRY: Yearly data collection and follow up record requests. Complete ongoing follow up record requests and data entry as needed.
  • ADMINISTRATIVE: Faculty, clinic, and hospital meetings; assist with quarterly and annual program updates; training volunteers; and collaborating with hospital clinics/staff.
  • CASE REVIEW/LEGAL AGENCY COLLABORATION: Weekly review of all new patient cases with clinician and EC’s. Monitor cases referred to legal partners. Consult with individual clinicians on possible attorney referrals at or after each meeting.
  • Performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus three years of related experience. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in psychology or education or related field.
  • Experience in working with school districts.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) candidates are preferred
  • Candidates who have worked in organizations providing family supports/services.

Other Requirements

  • Must successfully complete online systems training requirements.
  • Familiarity with special education system in NYC.
  • Understanding of NYC Department of Education.
  • Highly organized; good interpersonal skills; analyzing and interpreting data; adaptable to change.
  • Able to use public transportation to travel to and from meetings; able to use general office equipment for daily use.
  • Equipment Used: Telephone-frequently; small hand tools- frequently; copier; fax machine; and computer.
