Position Summary

The Lotti laboratory in the Department of Pathology & Cell Biology in Neurology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center is seeking to recruit hard-working, ambitious, and energetic individuals as part of his research team. Research in the Lotti laboratory is focused on molecular mechanisms of neurological disease, with an emphasis on investigating the role of RNA processing dysfunction in the etiology of ALS and SMA. The Technician B will assist post-doctoral fellows and other research staff in their analyses of mouse models of ALS and SMA and will assist in the day-to-day operation of the laboratory.


Responsibilities

Working under the general supervision of Principal Investigator in the Department of Neurology, and in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures, the Technician B will provide research support to a molecular biology laboratory that is focused on the analysis of mouse models of neurological diseases. The primary role of the Technician B will provide support for studies related to mouse husbandry and translational research studies using mouse models. The Technician B will also assist in the day-to-day operation of the laboratory.

  • This position will include mouse colony maintenance (tagging, tailing, weaning) and genotyping procedures, as well as general mouse handling and assistance with post-surgical care and injections
  • Conduct small animal husbandry, animal handling, and specific procedures
  • Perform genotyping PCR to maintain transgenic mouse colonies used in projects, including images of genotyping PCR gels and tabulation of genotyping results
  • Perform laboratory and animal technical duties to include, but not limited to: weighing animals and feed, blood withdrawals, performing injections, operating behavioral equipment, and collecting tissue samples
  • Data analyses as needed
  • Maintains basic records of experiments, methodologies, and test results in a log of work performed
  • Maintain inventory and order supplies.

Performs additional related duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

Requires a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, physics, or related science or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.


Preferred Qualifications

Candidates who have had previous research experience are preferred. Candidates with a driver's license are preferred.
