The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary

University Life is a central division at the University focused on enhancing the student experience across Columbia’s 17 schools and colleges. University Life programs and initiatives are informed by three core values: inclusion & belonging, student well-being, and sexual respect. The University Life division consists of four departments: Student Life, Center for Student Success and Intervention, Religious Life, and Community Impact.

The Center for Student Success and Intervention (CSSI) uses a 360-degree lens to approach student support work, including student conduct, intervention case management, and student support initiatives. CSSI incorporates supportive measures for students with more significant needs, including students managing academic and behavioral issues, students of concern, and students with unmet basic needs. CSSI is responsible for connecting students to the support that they need to overcome challenging situations, and also oversees the University's student conduct investigation and adjudication processes. Student Support and Intervention, in accordance with the expectations of students at Columbia University, upholds the highest standards of respect, integrity, and civility.

The Associate Director of Student Conduct reports to the Director of Student Conduct in the Center for Student Success and Intervention, the Associate Director of Student Conduct is responsible for supporting students in maintaining a safe, honest, and responsible campus community by responding to all reports of Title VI, academic and behavioral misconduct.  The Associate Director, along with other members of the Student Conduct team, conducts Dean’s Discipline Hearings in a manner that holds students accountable and supports learning and development. The Associate Director regularly communicates and collaborates with staff members across the Columbia University community on the Morningside, Manhattanville and CUIMC campuses.The Associate Director supervises at least one Coordinator for Student Conduct and provides oversight in their implementation of the Dean’s Discipline process. In addition to hearing cases, the incumbent is responsible for special projects or assignments, committee involvement, trainings, faculty outreach, etc. 


Responsibilities

  • Student Conduct Case Adjudication: Respond to allegations of Title VI, academic and behavioral misconduct through the Dean’s Discipline process, which emphasizes accountability and education. This includes the review of reports received, any necessary investigative measures, leading disciplinary hearings, documentation, and, as necessary, implementation of sanctions ranging from disciplinary warning through expulsion from the University. Case dependent, the Associate Director may also communicate regarding case outcomes to family, faculty, and other University staff, including the Dean of a student’s college.
  • Collaboration and communication. Serve as the Student Conduct departmental liaison for Schools on the CUIMC Campus, as well as Columbia Morningside and Manhattanville Graduate and Professional Schools to ensure successful implementation of the Dean’s Discipline process for their respective schools. Assist the Director of Student Conduct in implementing the Dean’s Discipline process for the undergraduate community through collaboration with various departments including but not limited to Residential Life,  Fraternity and Sorority Life, Center for Student Advising, Columbia Athletics, and Community Development to address student conduct issues within the undergraduate community. Serve as departmental representative for University Committees as needed. 
  • Supervision: The Associate Director supervises at least one Student Conduct Specialist, overseeing their professional development and performance appraisals. The Associate Director provides oversight to the Coordinator in their implementation of the Dean’s Discipline Process. 
  • Education, program development & training. Through professional organization involvement and independent research, the Associate Director is responsible for staying current on trends and issues related to the field of student conduct. The Associate Director is responsible for applying or integrating new theories and practices to related services and programs. The Associate Director will collaborate with the Associate Director of Operations to provide information and training using case statistics to educate administrators, student groups, and student leaders on student conduct trends and issues, as well as topics including, but not limited to: Dean’s Discipline, academic integrity, conflict resolution, incident reporting and documentation, policies and sanctioning.

  • As a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Council of Ivy Group Presidents (Ivy League), it is imperative that members of the Columbia University community, in all matters related to the intercollegiate athletics program, exhibit the highest professional standards and ethical behavior with regard to adherence to NCAA, Conference, University, and Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education rules and regulations.  


Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree required and a minimum of five years of related experience in the areas of student conduct, residence life and/or alcohol and other drug education. Advanced degree preferred in Higher Education, Student Personnel Administration, Counseling, Law or related field.
  • Must demonstrate dedication to the principles and values of the field of Student Conduct and have an understanding of FERPA, Clery and other laws pertaining to student conduct.
  • Must be comfortable working in a dynamic, urban, fast-paced, detail-oriented environment.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to exercise superior judgment and discretion are required.
  • Proven ability to handle multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of professionalism and attention to detail must be shown.
