The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
 

Position Summary

Reporting to the CIO of Columbia University Irving Medical Center Information Technology, the Director of Research Information Technology and Computing Services will be responsible for maintaining key relationships with leaders of other research support groups including the Office of the Chief Research Information Officer and various teams within CUIMC-IT and the Medical Center. The primary focus of the Director is to support the research enterprise and to promote and maintain the highest quality research computing technology and services at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.  The incumbent is responsible for building and managing the Research Information Technology and Computing team while exploring and recommending new technologies and approaches in support of the University.



Responsibilities

  • Partners with the research information technology committee and the research community to establish and maintain appropriate research technology initiatives. Oversee the quality of support to existing services and identify and resolve current and future needs. 5%
  • Serves as the primary liaison between CUIMC-IT and the research community, including our partners at CUIT and NYP.  Incumbent will also work closely with CUIMC-IT and the Research Data Center resources. 5%
  • Works strategically and collaboratively with all central information technology areas involved in successful research support and with research and technology leaders at schools and departments throughout the University. 10%
  • Partners with the research information technology committee in the creation and execution of a vision and strategic road map for technology support of computationally supported research at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. 10%
  • Works with data navigators to develop and maintain a process that will gather the research data requirements and provide a consistent and secure process for identifying the data sources and delivering the data to the research teams as needed. 5%
  • Develop synergies across the University research computing landscape to increase the productivity of the technology and reduce associated costs. 10%
  • Develops research applications intended to improve the productivity of the CUIMC research community. 5%
  • Monitors trends in academic and medical research computing technology to generate new applications and evaluate potential data sources. 5%
  • Advises the data and IT teams on enhancing current products, contributing to the improvement of existing integrity processes, and participating in the design of new products. 10%
  • Provides high-level vendor management and vendor selection guidance for medium to high-scale projects as required. 5%
  • Identifies, evaluates, and implements technologies to significantly improve research support services. 5%
  • Ensures systems and application designs that are scalable, reliable, and secure. 5%
  • Proactively identifies new needs of researchers and develops a process to deliver new services. 5%
  • Develop a communication plan and shares information with the CUIMC research community regarding service offerings. 5%
  • Represents CUIMC-IT in local, regional, and national consortia such as the Coalition for Academic Scientific Computation, Common Solutions Group, Ivy Plus, and others. 5%
  • Develop an effective protocol to obtain feedback from CUIMC researchers about services via surveys, focus groups, and other methods. 5%

 

 


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required. Advanced degree desirable.
  • Minimum 8-10 years’ related experience.
  • Demonstrated team leadership with experience in building and managing information technology teams with medical research data management and research computing experience.
  • Experience with moderate scale project management, methodologies, and systems implementation.
  • Expert knowledge of technology, applications and interfaces designed to support medical research.
  • Continuously look for improvements to research computing administration that can be used to streamline and reduce the administrative burden on researchers. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with senior faculty and executives

 


Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong technical knowledge of systems and technologies that support various types of research in the medical community.
  • 10+ years of progressive information technology experience in research systems engineering, research focused environment or a related field.
  •  Experience assessing and implementing advanced technology architectures and approaches in various research areas.
  • Advanced degree in computer science, computer engineering, data science or relevant science or engineering field.
  • Some experience with academic research including successful research grant proposal preparation and submittal, or execution of technology enhanced research.
  • Experience defining, managing, and mentoring a team to resolve conflicts and encourage constructive interchange with peers and team members.
