The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary
This is a unique opportunity to support the NSF-funded Science & Technology Center, Learning the Earth With Artificial Intelligence & Physics (LEAP) in its mission to expand its communications strategy, be recognized as the leader in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for climate research worldwide, and proliferate emerging climate solutions in the areas that need them most. Reporting to LEAP’s Managing Director and Senior Manager of Communications & Knowledge Transfer, the Special Assistant will support communications initiatives across three main areas of focus: LEAP's Communications Platform, Knowledge Collection & Content Generation, and Knowledge Transfer & Stakeholder Engagement
Responsibilities
Online Communications Development + Coordination:
Iterating, developing, establishing, and regularly promoting a communications platform (e.g., website, monthly newsletter, Twitter
collection hub) to centralize state-of-the-art information and research on climate and AI Generating new connections to invite researchers to contribute to this platform, particularly to globally disseminate emerging climate-adaptation solutions. Designing and disseminating feedback and metrics mechanisms
Outreach + Stakeholder Cultivation:
Encouraging conversations and collaborations with climate-research, practitioners, experts, and other stakeholders to foster participation. Working with LEAP team to form, grow, and maintain relationships with key stakeholders.
Content Generation + Knowledge Transfer:
Taking initiative to complete and centralize knowledge-collection via written communications (emails, social media communications, etc.)Generating content for stakeholder engagement and regular communications to the global community about critical developments and initiatives in climate research. Developing and publishing an annual summary of key investment areas
for AI on climate change adaptation. Designing and disseminating feedback mechanisms
Event Planning:
Helping to organize virtual events like international hackathons to engage the community in the fight against climate change.
Organizing a virtual annual event gathering with leaders in the AI and climate space. Providing overall support for the development, planning, and execution of these virtual events from ideation stage through active facilitation assistance, including preparing collateral materials, note-taking, and organizational assistance.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and 3-5 years’ experience required. Experience with science writing preferred.
- Computing skills required: Google Suite, Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel). Professional proficiency in graphic and/or facilitation tools such as Canva, the Adobe suite or similar are a plus.
- Professional proficiency with social media tools such as Twitter and LinkedIn required.
- Excellent oral, written, organizational and interpersonal skills required. Accuracy, thoroughness, attention to detail, and ability to exercise exceptional judgment are essential.
- Must be able to identify priorities within multiple assignments in a high pressure, short-deadline environment, and be able to work independently with diplomacy and efficiency in such an environment.
- Must be a team player and able to effectively interact with all levels of faculty, staff and stakeholders.
- Must be able to work in-person and remotely as needed.

- A strong interest in climate, data, and artificial intelligence is preferred but not required
