Position Summary
The Arthur W. Diamond Law Library of Columbia University is seeking applications for the position of Bibliographic Assistant in the Cataloging Unit of the Technical Services Department. Reporting to the Head of Cataloging, the incumbent performs copy cataloging of the Law Libraries’ resources in various formats, reviews and updates vendor-provided bibliographic records and batch loads vendor-generated records for online content into the Law Library’s catalog.
Schedule:
Monday through Friday 9 AM to 5 PM, with some flexibility within departmental hours of 7 AM to 7 PM depending on departmental schedules and needs.
Responsibilities
- Catalog with LC and OCLC member copy all legal and non-legal resources in various formats using the OCLC Connexion client.
- Modify and upgrade bibliographic records following established guidelines; derive original records based on earlier editions; verify authority records.
- Review and update vendors’ bibliographic records.
- Process added copies and withdrawn materials.
- Perform maintenance of bibliographic and item records in Pegasus, the Law Library’s ILS.
- Batch load vendor records for microfiche and online content into Pegasus.
- Assist with special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience with at least one library ILS and Worldcat.
- Accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to transliterate non-roman alphabets using conversion charts.
- Fluency in English, strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) and Google Apps (docs and sheets).
- Routine lifting of heavy books and boxes, up to 50 pounds and ability to push heavy book trucks required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Technical services experience at an academic or legal library is preferred.
- Familiarity with legal materials and terminology is preferred.
- Working knowledge of at least one additional language is preferred.
