The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Director, HR Compliance the Compliance Officer will be responsible for ensuring the University’s employment policies and practices align with the needs of a workforce dispersed across the country. Critical to this role will be the successful completion of a thorough review of local employment laws, workers’ compensation and unemployment insurance obligations across the United States, followed by an identification of areas within current University policies and processes that need to be addressed. The incumbent will work to ensure proper practices are in place to account for regularly changing state and municipal labor laws, ensuring that Columbia remains compliant in locations where we have employees.
In addition to a comprehensive understanding of labor law practices, this role also requires strong communications skills to ensure effective collaboration with partners in human resources, tax, payroll and legal counsel
Responsibilities
- Conduct a rigorous review of current University policies and practices related to human resources, tax, and payroll to identify areas of focus.
- Ensure the University continues to operate in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to wage and hour compliance, employee benefits, employment agreements, workplace policies, leaves of absence and disability accommodation across all states in which the University operates.
- Make written recommendations regarding process and policy to mitigate risks related to employment law compliance.
- Work with various business teams to develop processes to satisfy regulatory obligations.
- Assist in drafting and revising various employment-related documents and policies.
- Develop processes to monitor future changes in laws and regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; at least 5 years directly related experience and a strong understanding of state and municipal labor practices.
- Must possess critical thinking skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree
- Admission to the New York State Bar
- Ability to work independently and effectively manage multiple assignments.
