Posting for Secondary Appointment

This is a 12-month per year, part-time administrative appointment, during which the faculty member will retain responsibilities for teaching and scholarship/creative work and continue to accrue time towards sabbatical. This position is appointed with approval by the Dean. Term length, retention, renewal, and selection processes for these positions are set by department by-laws. The terms generally match the fiscal year, starting on July 1 and ending on June 30. Only faculty within the departments with openings are eligible, and further eligibility and selection criteria are governed by departmental by-laws. 

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the Department chair/director is responsible for:  

  • The orderly administration of the department/school/program,  
  • The management of its staff and faculty (e.g., assigning work, recommending merit, and supporting promotion and tenure) 
  • The quality of its educational program, and  
  • The maintenance of high standards in faculty teaching and research/scholarship/creative work. 

The chair/director is part of CAHSS leadership and is: 

  • Expected to consider and serve the needs of all CAHSS students, staff, and faculty 
  • Responsible for knowing, following, and enforcing institutional policies, as well as being a positive influence on the culture of their program and the University 

The chair/director holds a position of authority within the institution and must act judiciously to create and uphold department policies. 

Essential Functions

  • Plans and coordinates the instructional program / curriculum with faculty members and the assistant to the chair/director 
  • Assigns courses and teaching schedules to faculty members 
  • Evaluates faculty members at regular intervals in the areas of scholarship/creative work, teaching, and service  
  • Coordinates departmental processes related to promotion or tenure  
  • Coordinates the recruitment and onboarding of new faculty and staff members  
  • Prepares and administers the departmental budget 
  • Attends and participates in all CAHSS chairs & directors meetings, which typically take place on alternating Fridays, 10-11:30. 
  • Regularly communicates with the department’s staff and faculty, and with majors, minors, and graduate students as appropriate 
  • Regularly communicates with CAHSS and DU staff and administrators 
  • Supports CAHSS fundraising and works in partnership with Advancement on departmental / program fundraising and philanthropy 
  • Conducts the general business of the department. On decisions of importance to the department, College, and University, the chair is expected to consult department faculty members. 
  • Leads colleagues in department-level strategic planning 
  • Sustains and develops departmental culture with an eye toward equity and transparency

  • Current CAHSS DU Faculty member

Work Schedule
12 month working schedule, appointed per department bylaws

Salary Range:
The annual salary for this secondary position is a 12.5% stipend based on base faculty position and a set of course releases based on departmental teaching loads and size. 

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
