The Department of Facilities Management supports the mission of the University of Denver by providing an aesthetically pleasing, clean, orderly, safe and healthy environment in which to learn, teach, live and work.

Position Summary

Under direct supervision of the Grounds Foreman and Assistant Grounds Foreman, this position performs skilled or technical types of work associated with the maintenance of lawns, fertilization, irrigation, trees, shrubs, and flower beds and is expected to supervise other grounds personnel as assigned.

Essential Functions

  • Performs the planting, cultivation, propagation, and care of turf, shrubs, flowers, trees, etc.
  • Inspects all equipment to ensure that they are clean, properly lubricated, adequately sharpened, and in safe working condition. Will perform minor maintenance tasks as required.
  • Applies fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, etc., and assures the proper and timely completion of such activities.
  • Maintains accurate records of chemical use, seeding, fertilization, aeration, and pesticide use.
  • Identifies insects or diseases affecting plants on campus and recommends treatments to combat them.
  • Maintains the health and beauty of trees and shrubs. This includes wrapping and staking of young trees and the pruning and removal of trees and shrubs.
  • Guides and gives technical assistance to subordinate employees in the performance of their assigned duties.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must possess the knowledge of standardized work routines and the ability to follow or give oral and/or written tasks.
  • Thorough knowledge of all types of landscaping and irrigation equipment. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Required Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or GED is required
  • Four years experience at the University of Denver in landscaping, grounds maintenance or irrigation
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License and insurable by the University of Denver's insurance carrier.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical exam, and lift 100 lbs.

Working Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.
  • The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
  • The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and /or humid conditions, toxic and caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical Activities

  • Moderate to strenuous physical effort required.
  • Employee must be able to withstand long periods of time bending, crouching, sitting, standing, reaching and repetitive motions with the hand-wrist and elbow-shoulder.
  • The employee must be able to work outside in all types of weather and lift, move and carry objects in excess of 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must have sufficient visual activity to perform duties as state above

Work Schedule

The University’s administrative offices are open Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Work schedule may vary.

The salary grade for the position is 05.

Hourly Rate

The hourly rate for this position is $22.34.
