Position Summary: 

This uniformed position is responsible for coordinating and delivering a wide range of training both internally to the department and externally to campus community partners. Key responsibilities include overseeing the field training officer program, in-service training, and self-defense courses. Additional responsibilities include collaborating with the manager of emergency preparedness on active threat response training and maintenance of crisis management plan. The role may also require fulfilling role as a field-based officer or supervisor to cover shifts or support special events, as needed. 

Essential Functions:  

  • Serves as the Department’s Training Coordinator. 
  • Administer the document management system (PowerDMS); create, and assign online courses to officers, design tests/quizzes, and analyze results. 
  • Develop and manage cohesive, branded training programs in collaboration with the Training Committee. 
  • Schedule all internal trainings and manage external requests for classes – includes the assignment of class instructors, test development, test results analysis. 
  • Ensure compliance with all policies and participate in recruiting, accreditation, and interview panels. 
  • Experience with lethal weapons systems (up to 5.56mm), tasers, and range records management. 
  • Oversee New Employee Orientation and provide guidance to field-based training officers. 
  • Maintain strong record-keeping practices, ensuring accurate documentation and compliance across all areas of training and departmental activities. 
  • Deliver comprehensive training in use-of-force and de-escalation techniques, equipping officers with the skills needed for safe and effective interactions. 
  • Expected to play a significant role in community engagement efforts, working closely with the Command Staff to strengthen relationships within the universities and local communities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Excellent writing and Microsoft Office skills. 
  • Meticulous, capable of reviewing and editing the work of others. 
  • Capacity to be discrete with sensitive information and able to maintain confidentiality. 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent credit hours with an emphasis in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or Security Management; or 1+ years related law enforcement/Campus Safety experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Previous experience as an instructor/trainer. 
  • At least 21 years of age at the time of hiring. 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver's license and be insurable under university guidelines; or obtain a valid Colorado’s driver’s license within the required time frame. 
  • Pass a job-related skills examination. 
  • Must successfully complete and maintain certification in Basic First Aid/CPR/AED, Defensive Driving, Firearm Qualification, Taser Qualification, and TPR (Threat Pattern Recognition) Use of Force Basic. 
  • Must pass a complete background check to include criminal, motor vehicle report and verification of employment and education. 
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen and human performance evaluation administered by a university approved physician. 
  • Must maintain physical fitness standards to ensure the ability to physically apprehend and detain suspects, provide emergency and protective services, and conduct other physically demanding assignments. 
  • Possess or obtain a City and County of Denver Security Guard License. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent credit hours with an emphasis in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or Security Management; or 2+ years of related law enforcement/Campus Safety experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • 1+ years practical experience managing a training function. 
  • Previous law enforcement recruit school and/or P.O.S.T. certification. 

Physical Activities and Requirements: 

It is the policy of the Department of Campus Safety (DCS) that all DCS personnel required to have a City and County of Denver issued Security Guard License for their position must successfully pass a job-related human performance evaluation as part of a conditional offer of employment. The human performance evaluation shall be administered by an approved University of Denver medical provider and will consist of an evaluation of the following: 

  • Lift/Carry: Transfer traffic cones to/from are of need (10lbs) Distance: 5’ 
  • Carry: Transfer fire extinguisher from wall cabinet to are of need (15lbs) 1x in 5 min 
  • Lift/Carry: Transfer traffic barricades to/from storage area, patrol vehicle, area of need (27lbs) Distance 10’ 
  • Push/Pull: Open/Close parking lot roll gates; must open building doors (15lbs) 1x in 5 min 
  • Push/Pull: Drag incapacitated person out of harm’s way; (65 lbs.) 1x in 5 min 
  • Climb: Must access 10th floor of campus interior structure during emergency calls when elevators are locked out; must patrol stairways; must pass performance related test (60 steps in under 5 min) 
  • Climb: Must access rooftop hatches, rooftop of parking lot.  17 x in under 5 min. (Ladder) 
  • Dynamic Posture: Must respond to first aid/medical assist calls, perform CPR. Forward bend to reach a point (1” from floor) 1 x 5 min. 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include correction to 20/30 vision, close vision, distance vision, night vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must also possess the ability to hear, for safety reasons inherent to the essential functions of the job. Must maintain fitness standards to ensure the ability to physically apprehend and detain suspects, provide emergency and protective services, and conduct other physically demanding assignments. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and run, climb stairs, and must routinely lift and/or move 50 pounds. During emergencies, this position may be required to move incapacitated individuals away from dangerous circumstances. 

Working Environment: 

As field-based personnel Campus Safety Officers routinely work outside in all weather conditions. This position may be assigned to any shift or combination of shifts as is deemed necessary by the Captain/Sergeant or members of the Department's senior management group. Campus Safety Officers are considered essential personnel and may be called upon to work additional hours to cover shifts or provide special event coverage. 

Work Schedule: 

Non-Exempt position. 40-hour work week, Schedule determined by Supervisor

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 10.

Hourly Range:
The hourly range for the position is $31.13-$35.93.
