The Velotta Lab at the University of Denver is accepting applications for a Research Technician in evolutionary physiology and genomics research. This position requires a MSc in ecology and evolutionary biology or related field, a demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, a fluency in bioinformatics and data analysis, and commitment to fostering an inclusive work environment.

Position Summary

The Velotta Lab at the University of Denver is seeking a Research Technician in evolutionary physiology and genomics with expertise in DNA/RNA sequencing and analysis, bioinformatics, population genomics, scans for natural selection, and a knowledge of animal physiology and ecology. The preferred candidate will have expertise analyzing genomic data to understand population demography and natural selection. The preferred candidate will a strong background in evolutionary biology and genetics. The ability and desire to work both independently and collaboratively with other members of the lab is critical to the success of this position. This position is grant funded for six months and the start date is December 1, 2024.

This is a temporary, non-benefited position not to exceed 1,000 hours in a calendar year.

Essential Functions

In addition to following the University of Denver policies and procedures, principal responsibilities include but are not limited to: generating and analyzing genomic datasets, project coordination, training and supervising other personnel and disseminating results through publication and conference presentations.

Essential Functions

  • Generate and analyze genomic datasets on remote servers
  • Statistical analysis of genomic and phenotypic datasets
  • RNA-sequencing and analysis
  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.

Required Qualifications

  • A Masters in Ecology, Evolution, Biology or a related field (thesis)
  • Experience in generation and analysis of whole genome sequencing data including DNA and RNA
  • Fluency in R statistical software and Unix

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in demographic analysis of whole genome data
  • Expertise in analysis of scans for natural selection
  • Experience in natural systems
  • Understanding of animal ecology, evolution, and physiology
  • Able to code in R, Unix, or Python
  • Able to access and work in remote high-performance computer clusters

Work Schedule

  • 40 hours per week
  • This is a temporary, non-benefited position, grant funded for six months.

Hourly Range

The hourly range for the position is $20.00 - $22.00.

The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
