Position Summary
Professional Advisors support the teaching and development of new social work practitioners committed to social justice. The Senior Professional Advisor position supports day-to-day operational functions of the Professional Advising team, manages data organization and analysis, and facilitates aspects of new hire onboarding. This position also supports MSW students with general academic issues, aspects of degree requirements, and the interpretation and understanding of university resources, policies, and procedures. This includes connecting students to institutional resources while establishing improved intervention systems, efficiencies, and strategies for overall student success. The Senior Professional Advisor collaborates closely with faculty and other GSSW teams. This position updates and maintains student records, documents pertinent information, and manages student meetings in collaboration with both GSSW and University partners. This position reports to the Manager of Professional Advising, under the umbrella of the GSSW Student Services team.
Essential Functions
Supervision and Department Operations
- Oversee and independently manage student employee hiring and support Professional Advisors with student employee supervision processes and onboarding. This position may supervise student employees.
- Participate in Professional Advisor hiring and onboarding
- Facilitate standing meetings and support with Professional Advisor questions as needed and/or when the Manager of Professional
- Advising is out of office or unavailable.
- Responsible for coordinating with Professional Advising staff, GSSW departments, and faculty on completing needed updates to academic planning and student resource materials.
- Assist with updating team policies, procedures, workflows, handbook materials, and e-mail templates.
- Serve on GSSW and DU-wide committees as requested. Participate in strategic planning, development, and management process in support of GSSW.
- Co-lead efforts to evaluate advising-related programs and provide leadership in working with associate/assistant deans, program directors, university offices, staff, and faculty to ensure a seamless advising experience for students.
Academic Advising
- With the DU Office of Financial Aid, communicate Satisfactory Academic Progress status and individualized academic plans for students
- Support communication and intervention strategies for students on academic probation
- Co-lead initiatives and deepen rapport with key GSSW stakeholders to advance and participate in a new academic advising model
- Co-lead Denver Campus initiatives during peak advising periods.
- Lead efforts to pull, organize, and communicate data for department audits, such as leave of absence and academic standing audits.
Student Support
- In partnership with DU campus partners, such as DU Student Outreach and Support, communicate and track student retention concerns, leaves of absence and re-entry, academic and/or personal struggles, and health and wellness promotion
- Connect faculty and staff to resources for student-related concerns and support
- Support student event planning, including orientation and commencement activities
- Support the implementation of student services and advising-related policy in collaboration with the Manager of Professional Advising Program Directors, and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
- Point of contact for MSW students to create academic plans, uphold policies and practices related to student matriculation, and provide partnership with staff, faculty, and University partners
- Maintain knowledge of the LCSW licensure process in Colorado and nationwide
- Support students in connecting to relevant GSSW career services and resources

- Strong understanding of FERPA.
- Ability to facilitate crisis management in collaboration with relevant University of Denver departments for student academic and health-related concerns (emotional, mental, and physical).
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in social work or a related field*
- 3+ years of related experience in higher education or person-centered support setting
- Experience tracking and measuring student and/or performance outcomes
*2 years in a GSSW Professional Advisor role can sub for a master’s degree as a promotional opportunity. This experience would be in addition to the 3+ years related experience requirement
Preferred Qualifications
- MSW degree with 3-4 years post-masters experience
- Experience facilitating crisis management for student academic and health-related concerns (emotional, mental, and physical)
- Experience with CSWE-accredited social work programs
- Experience with Banner and/or other student information systems
- Experience with clinical licensure and/or understanding of licensure processes
- Experience with field education and/or graduate internship experiences and processes
Working Environment
- Standard office environment
Physical Activities
- Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.
- Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs. with assistance.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. This position is eligible for some remote work options.

The salary grade for the position is 9.
Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $55,000-$60,000.
