University Relations aims to strengthen DU’s strategic position locally, regionally and nationally through data-driven and authentic storytelling across multiple channels with focused support on the university's value drivers: academics and research; enrollment and admissions, athletics and advancement. Position Summary
The Social Media Communications Coordinator will work as a member of the University Relations team to elevate the university’s brand presence, quickly respond to any crises or issues on behalf of the brand across a variety of social media channels and proactively create content to support University Relations initiatives, typically under tight deadlines.
The ideal candidate will have background and interest in social media, communications and/or crisis response and content creation, with the ability to anticipate potential risks, develop response strategies and support proactive messaging. This role requires the ability to define and analyze complex problems, make sound decisions independently and collaborate effectively with key stakeholders across the university. This position must demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills, adaptability to changing priorities and a commitment to the University of Denver’s values, including diversity, equity and inclusion.
Essential Functions
- Serve as the primary liaison between the Social Media and University Relations’ Communications team, ensuring social media messaging aligns with broader university communications strategies
- Monitor social media channels in real time, moderating comments, conducting social listening, responding to inbound inquiries and identifying and collaborating to address potential crisis situations or reputational risks on behalf of the university
- Support in the development and maintenance of a social media crisis communication protocol in partnership with the communications team
- Work directly with communications colleagues to promote university publications and statements, including the University of Denver Magazine, RadioEd podcast and relevant university news
- Collaborate with as campus partners to craft original content that communications unit-specific news that supports the university’s goals and objectives
- Support the Social Media team in generating, editing, publishing and sharing daily content (original text, images, and video) designed to elevate our brand presence and engage with our communities
- Track and report on key social media engagement and sentiment metrics
- Serve as a collaborative and supportive member of the University Relations team, assisting with events, projects and initiatives as needed.
- Assist with social media marketing tasks, projects and paid campaigns as needed
- Exercise the utmost professional discretion while handling sensitive, confidential information
- Proactively monitor social media industry news and platform developments and make recommendations to inform university social media strategy
- Perform other duties as needed and/or assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent written and spoken English language skills with the ability to craft clear, concise and brand-aligned messaging
- Strong understanding of social media platforms including Meta, LinkedIn, X, Bluesky, Threads, Reddit and TikTok, and social media management software such as Sprout Social
- Competency with Microsoft Office products, including Excel, PowerPoint and Word
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team environment while managing multiple deadlines
- Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to anticipate challenges and respond effectively
- Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and build relationships across multiple departments
- High level of professionalism and adaptability to shifting priorities
- Commitment to organizational priorities and university values
- Meticulous attention to detail and ability to accept and implement constructive feedback
Required Qualifications
- 1-2 years’ experience working in professional social media
- Proficiency with various social media platforms including but not limited to Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Bluesky, Threads, Reddit and YouTube, as well as Meta Business Suite
- Excellent writing, editing (photo/video/text), presentation and communication skills
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in marketing, communications, public relations or a related field
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated portfolio of previous professional social media work
- Experience with social media management software such as Sprout Social
- Experience working with paid social media campaigns
- Experience handling social media crisis communications or reputation management
Working Environment
Due to the nature of this position, frequent on-campus work is required. The successful incumbent must live in or be willing to relocate to the Denver metro area. The University Relations division has a flexible work arrangement with its employees, allowing for both community and culture building in office and remote work from home when appropriate.
Standard office environment: Activities are primarily performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse (75%); job may require limited, varying lengths of time and travel moderate distances to perform work (25%)
Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
Regularly performs work which requires traveling on uneven surfaces and exposure to external environmental conditions as part of photo and video shoots.
Some travel as well as weekend or after-hours work will be required to fulfill duties.
Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.
Noise level is quiet to moderate.
Physical Activities
- Ability to use a computer for an extended period of time.
- Occasionally required to move about the office/campus
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. In accordance with the University’s flexible work policy, this position is eligible to be considered for partial remote work. Further details regarding this plan will be determined with the hiring manager and are dependent on the division and team specific needs.

The salary grade for the position is 8.
Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $56,500 - $60,000.
The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
