IT/EAS maintains software applications that support the University's core administrative, academic, and research functions as well as enhanced services to our community. We do this while maintaining our commitment to IT strategic directions such as increased use of Software-as-a-Service and cloud-based applications, as well as close working partnerships with other units within the IT division as well as our end-user departments.

IT/EAS ensures the current and future software applications are efficient and effective, maintains an appropriate balance between leading-edge activities and core business processes, and provides appropriate information access and data security, working closely with the IT Information Security team.
Position Summary
The Assistant Vice Chancellor (AVC) Enterprise Application Services leads the Enterprise Application Services unit within the IT division. This position is responsible for the software application portfolio, which includes the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP - Banner) system, over 70 cloud-based, Software-as-a-Service applications, Learning Management Systems, and other core and niche software solutions necessary to meet the technology needs of the University. The AVC drives the analysis and re-engineering of existing business processes and identifies and acquires new tools from vendors to keep pace with the rapidly changing technology and information landscape.
In collaboration with the Office of Institutional Research and data stewards across campus, the AVC develops and executes data, reporting, and analytics strategy and governance framework for the University. The AVC is responsible for communication and interaction with the campus community regarding enterprise software purchases and services.
This position reports to the Vice Chancellor/CIO.
Essential Functions
Overall Leadership
- Provide strategic leadership and guidance at the leadership level in critical areas of enterprise application services having an institution-wide impact.
- Oversee cross-institutional initiatives and projects, fostering strategic partnerships in carrying out enterprise-wide application, web, and data services for the central IT organization.
- Develop strong working relationships with other units within the IT division.
- Lead a department of 50+ professionals. Hire, train, supervise, and review director-level employees.
- Mentor direct reports in acquiring tools to manage people with an awareness of differences in culture, working styles, and business experience. Create clarity, build trust, and optimize individual and team performance.
- Manage a multi-million-dollar departmental budget. Provide input for the annual and multi-year budget preparation for EAS in collaboration with Business & Operations, including long-range financial planning.
- Work with IT vendors in exploring new products and approaches, negotiating purchases and contracts, and addressing any issues related to products or services, including compliance.
- Represent the University with higher education-related organizations (e.g., Educause) to ensure that the University is gaining maximum value from our subscription services and memberships.
Software, Web, Data, and Processes
- Develop strategic direction for enterprise-wide software applications, mobile applications, and intranet for the university.
- Responsible for the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of all data and data structures that exist in information systems enterprise-wide.
- Identify new areas for technology improvement, such as leveraging software-as-a-service or advancing business intelligence/analytics, resulting in operational efficiencies and increased productivity using evolving information systems and technologies.
- Ensure the University is collecting the appropriate data to serve its needs, analyzing that data, and using the results to support business decisions, in close collaboration with the Institutional Research office.
- Play an active role in Data Governance by participating in the Data Stewardship Advisory Board (DSAB) and advising the co-chairs on the bi-monthly community meetings of the Information, Measurement, and Analytics Council (IMAC).
- Represent IT in the Data Privacy Committee.
- Maintain knowledge of emerging software, mobile and web technologies as they relate to the higher education space.
- Lead comprehensive assessment, evaluation and re-engineering of applications, data systems, processes, and procedures to scale for growth, eliminate inefficiencies and increase service levels.
- Supervises direct reports from the Enterprise Application Services unit.
Internal Controls and Policy Development
- Define and maintain internal controls necessary to:
- Assure successful audit outcomes
- Create software and data related policies and guidelines for internal and community-wide audiences in collaboration with other IT units
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
- Lead the digital accessibility efforts to make the campus a digitally inclusive environment.
- Partner with the University’s ADA coordinator to create digital accessibility policies, standards, and guidelines.
- Co-chair the Digital Accessibility Working Group.
Project Prioritization and Communication
- Develop and implement an approach that would identify all EAS related needs within administrative and academic units, working with other IT units in this process.
- Assess the EAS unit’s current portfolio of workload and projects and advise the VC/CIO of needed changes in priorities and personnel to address current and future assignments.
- Work with the VC/CIO in creating a prioritization process for the work of the unit that would reflect University priorities as defined by the VC/CIO while staying within resource constraints.
- Develop, implement, and communicate EAS plans and goals that align with division and University priorities with the VC/CIO in cooperation with the IT Project Management Office.
- Manage complex communication in coordination with the IT Project and change Management Offices, build collaborative trust, and focus people on results.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- General knowledge of programming languages, database management, application development, data warehousing, and advanced analytics/reporting software to support Business Intelligence/Analytics.
- Understanding of budget development and monitoring.
- Ability to negotiate software purchasing and licensing.
- Ability to attract, retain, motivate, coach, and develop EAS supervisors and staff.
- Ability to influence, build relationships, navigate politics, manage conflicts, and negotiate.
- Ability to identify potential risks in large projects and plan for the unexpected.
- Ability to apply critical thinking methodology for problem-solving and decision-making.
- Possess well-developed verbal and written communication skills.
- Skilled in leading meetings, setting agendas, driving decisions, and realizing desired outcomes.
- Ability to work closely with peers and members of other units within the IT division, including Infrastructure, Campus Partnerships, Business and Operations, and the Project Management Office.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 10 years of IT leadership experience in multiple IT areas
- 10 years of supervisory/management experience
- Experience managing a large integrated software portfolio
- Experience with management of data, reporting, and analytics infrastructure and resources
- Significant progressive experience in large complex business environments with proven success in understanding and driving technical decisions
- Significant experience in developing or implementing software using complex relational database systems
Preferred Qualifications
- Higher Education experience

- Off-site disaster recovery/business continuity environments
- Banner ERP experience
Physical Activities
- Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Evenings and weekends as needed.

Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $215,000 - $230,000.
The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting.
