The Frederick S. Pardee Institute for International Futures is the home of long-term forecasting and global trend analysis at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies. International Futures (IFs) is a large-scale, long-term, integrated global modeling system that represents demographic, economic, health, energy, agriculture, education, infrastructure, socio-political, environmental, and international politics subsystems for 188 countries interacting in the global system. The Pardee Institute works heavily on sponsored research projects with various government institutions, international organizations, NGOs, and to a lesser extent, private sector clients.

Position Summary
The Director of Analysis plays a central role in the leadership and management of the Pardee Institute’s research efforts, internal workflow, and external engagement.
The Director of Analysis oversees the coordination, review, and quality control of analytical and associated modeling and data building and management activities for all Geopolitical, Sustainable Development, and Model Development research at the Pardee Institute. The Director of Analysis reports to the Director and Director of Operations.
Essential Functions
- Research Management: Align research tasks and priorities with short, medium, and long-term client and Pardee Institute needs and strategic direction. Provide leadership of project conceptualization (or scoping) in the pre-project stage, by assessing the expected model and scenario usage (as applicable) and/or data building and analysis methodology, analytical advances or possible distinctive characteristics of research projects.
- Research Contribution: Collaborate with others to develop and answer research questions for client-facing and peer-reviewed research. Serve as a participating or lead author on reports and other professional publications and peer-reviewed publications when appropriate, writing to high professional standards in terms of intellectual and conceptual clarity. Contribute defined analytical components, such as a write-up of statistical models and associated results
- Team Leadership: Manage a team of research associates and other staff and research aides related to the analysis, data building, and data management activities at the Pardee Institute. Be sensitive to and support International Futures (IFs) data building and data management needs. Supervise and streamline data building and management for IFs and non-IFs-related projects. Act as a key interlocutor between client-based research efforts and the model development team, ensuring that there is clear and effective communication on model needs and advising on the relative priority of competing needs. Help develop the capacity of research supervisors to manage and improve reports’ performance.
- Methodological Leadership: Advise on the building and extension of IFs forecasting and scenario analysis capabilities. Provide domain expertise and review across the Pardee Institute’s project portfolio and selected modeling approaches while leveraging and learning from the domain expertise of Pardee colleagues, where appropriate. Advance the use in Pardee Institute research of cutting-edge quantitative techniques, including advanced econometrics or network analytic techniques, for example.
- Quality Assurance: Lead and advise others in the conceptualization, execution, and review of analytical products of the Pardee Institute produced for clients and public consumption. Provide analytical expertise and oversight across the Pardee Institute’s research portfolio, keeping apace with theoretical and methodological developments in international relations, international development and related fields. Assure research works and deliverables meet acceptable standards of quality prior to their timely submission.
- Institute Leadership: Serve on the Pardee Leadership Team, which is tasked with considering the Pardee Institute's main strategic issues and providing counsel to the Director and Director of Operations (with an emphasis on analytical advancements for policy-oriented research). Build, refine, and ensure compliance with policies, processes, and norms aimed at supporting efficiency and sustainability of Pardee Institute analysis. Supervise senior Institute research staff.
- Internal Engagement: Participate in Korbel School staff committees, task forces, events, and initiatives, as needed, representing the Pardee Institute’s interests and building engagement with outside staff, faculty, and students. Build connections across campus with other administrative and academic units.
- External Engagement: Play a lead role in external outreach and business development, including: building relationships with peer organizations; communicating research to academics, policymakers, and the public; and maintaining strong client relationships.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must have a demonstrated commitment to fostering an environment in which faculty, staff, students, and community partners from diverse backgrounds and cultural identities feel welcome and valued
- Knowledgeable with the IFs model, with the ability to assess its strengths and weaknesses and produce analysis with a high degree of sophistication
- Knowledgeable with advanced statistical analysis, with an ability to apply techniques to real-world data and produce analysis for technical and non-technical audiences
- Strong project management skills, including (but not limited to): tracking and communicating progress of toward milestones/deliverables; coordinating multiple tasks toward completion, communicating and managing expectations between stakeholders; and budgeting
- Demonstrated ability to mentor researchers on IFs-related and international studies-relevant analysis
- Excellent technical writing skills to lead research projects and grant applications
- Ability to create professional quality presentations and visualizations on IFs topics and other research products
- Ability to communicate research motivations, methodologies, and findings in written and verbal form to expert and non-expert audiences
- Ability to organize and efficiently manipulate data in Microsoft Excel
- Professional proficiency in Tableau, ArcGIS, Gephi or other data visualization software
- Professional proficiency in STATA, R, Python or other software suitable for the transformation and statistical analysis of large datasets
Required Qualifications
- Masters degree in International Relations, Political Science, Public Policy, or related
- 5+ years of experience in high quality social science research related to international development, security, or the environment
- Experience functioning within a team, working on multiple projects simultaneously, and meeting deadlines
- 5+ years supervisory experience, which could include full-time staff members and hourly employees
- Demonstrated experience in successfully managing all facets of multiple projects simultaneously, which could include the budget, timeline, scope, and communication
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. in International Relations, Political Science, Public Policy, or related field
- 7+ years of experience in high quality social science research related to international development, security, or the environment using quantitative methods
- 10+ years supervisory experience, which could include full-time staff members and hourly employees
- Experience in a lead role in producing successful proposals for external funding
- Experience as an effective handler of outside contractors
- Experience with using project management software to drive deliverables

- Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $126,000 - $136,000.
