Position Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Laboratory Technician to join our dynamic research team. This position requires expertise in tissue culture, molecular biology, and biochemistry. Additionally, the candidate will oversee laboratory management, including supplies inventory and personnel coordination.

The position is funded via a research grant and is contingent upon continued grant funding.

Essential Functions

  • Perform tissue culture techniques, such as maintaining and propagating cell lines.
  • Upon training, conduct virology experiments, including tasks like virus isolation, quantification, and characterization.
  • Handle molecular biology procedures, such as PCR, electrophoresis, cloning, and DNA/RNA extractions.
  • Analyze biochemical processes through methods like ELISA, Western blotting, and additional application specific enzymatic assays.
  • Manage laboratory supplies by overseeing procurement and maintaining inventory control.
  • Coordinate laboratory personnel to ensure optimal workflow and adherence to safety standards.
  • Document experimental procedures and results thoroughly, assisting in the preparation of reports and publications.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and researchers on various projects to advance the laboratory’s goals.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • A team-oriented mindset with a passion for achieving scientific excellence.

Required Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree or higher in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
  • At least two years of hands-on laboratory experience in tissue culture, molecular biology, and biochemistry is required. Applicants with experience in virological techniques are encouraged to apply, but this is not required.

Working Environment

  • Standard laboratory environment
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.
  • Ability to stand at laboratory bench, be seated at biosafety cabinet, and seated in front of microscopes for extended periods.

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number

The salary grade for the position is 7.

Hourly Range

The hourly range for this position is $23.96-$26.35.

The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.

About the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics

About Biological Sciences

The Department of Biological Sciences focuses on three areas of research and teaching; 1) Cell and Molecular Biology – including biophysics, neuroscience, cell signaling, and developmental biology, and 2) Ecology, Biodiversity – including behavioral ecology, plant-insect interactions, conservation biology, restoration ecology, and evolution and 3) Physiology of Health and Disease including emphasis on human physiology and exercise physiology. The department offers undergraduate majors of study including Biology (B.A./B.S.), Molecular Biology (B.S./B.S.), Ecology, and Biodiversity (B.A./B.S.) Physiology of Health and Disease (B.S.) and Integrated Sciences (B.A.). A concentration in Cognitive Neurosciences (B.A./B.S.) is also offered in conjunction with the Department of Psychology. At the graduate level, the department offers M.S. and Ph.D. with a research emphasis in either cell and molecular biology or ecology and biodiversity. A professional science masters (PSM) is offered in Biomedical Sciences and a M.S. in Clinical Exercise Physiology.
